Survey: 65 percent of Dutch citizens want less immigration

Survey: 65 percent of Dutch citizens want less immigration

By Eva Janssen 9 February 2020

A new survey has revealed that an overwhelming majority of Dutch citizens think that present immigration levels need to be curbed.
According to representative research conducted by Kantar and commissioned by De Telegraaf, nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of Dutch citizens believe that immigration must be limited. The survey also revealed that close to one half (48 percent) of Dutch citizens with non-Western backgrounds hold the same view, De Telegraaf reports.
The Central Bureau of Statistics projects that in the coming years the Dutch population will grow from about 17 million to 18 million in 2024, before reaching 19 million in as 2039. The force behind the expected population growth is immigration.

Each year 82,000 migrants flood into the country every year. In 2019, the Dutch population grow by roughly 132,000. Of that number,114,000 were migrants and 16,000 were asylum seekers. Half of the newcomers came from outside of Europe.

A significant portion of Dutch society fears that’s this kind of population growth could result in significant problems in the country’s’ healthcare and housing sectors. According to the survey, even more Dutch citizens (91%) think there’s barely any room left in the country for more people.
Between 2014 and 2018, the Dutch government granted a total of 122,000 residence permits to “asylum seekers”.
In December of last year, Voice of Europe reported that the number of Moroccans who applied for asylum in the Netherlands in 2019 approached the 2016 record, and there’s no war in Morocco.
Responding to the trend of abuse, immigration researcher Jan van de Beek said: “The apparent abuse of the asylum procedure by criminal, nuisance and hopeless asylum seekers further underlines that the asylum system is bankrupt.
