BARNHART — Investigators say one suspect is in jail and another is being sought in the shooting and beating death of a Jefferson County man in a meth deal gone bad.

Terry Huighe, 45, of Barnhart, was killed last weekend. Authorities say Cesar Arnulfo Miranda Martinez, 21, a Honduran who was living in Kansas City, was arrested late Thursday in Kansas City.

Martinez was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action and was being held at the Jefferson County Jail at Hillsboro, with a cash bond set at $1 million.

Authorities say a second suspect has also been charged but remained at large Friday. He is Armando Santoyo, 23, a Mexican living in Kansas City. Authorities said they believed he might have fled to Mexico. Advertisement

The killing was the first murder recorded this year in Jefferson County.

The two suspects and Huighe had been involved in meth trafficking in Jefferson County, according to Capt. Mark Tulgetske of the Herculaneum police and the St. Louis Area Major Case Squad.

Tulgetske said investigators believe the killing stemmed from a "series of business transactions gone bad" and added, "The investigation is far from over."

About 25 detectives from the St. Louis Area Major Case Squad were activated in the case last weekend. Eight investigators also worked in Kansas City to track the suspects.

Jefferson County Sheriff Oliver "Glenn" Boyer said Huighe was shot three times with a 12-gauge shotgun and once with a small handgun. Huighe also had been beaten severely, Boyer said.

A neighbor found Huighe's body about 5 p.m. May 12 in the woods near Huighe's home in the 7300 block of Mulberry Road near a quarry in a remote area. Authorities said Huighe lived alone and worked for the city of St. Louis.
