Syed Farook, Muslim Convert Enrique Marquez Plotted Terror Attack in 2012

Syed Farook, Muslim Convert Enrique Marquez Plotted Terror Attack in 2012

New York Daily News / Facebook

    by MICHELLE MOONS9 Dec 2015

FBI officials have reportedly revealed that Enrique Marquez, a convert to Islam who purchased the rifles used in the San Bernardino terror attack, had plotted with Syed Farook in 2012 to carry out a similar attack to those that Farook and wife Tashfeen Malik carried out last week.

The FBI told Breitbart News, “We have not commented on the ongoing investigation in response to news reports. At this time, no one has been charged in connection with the case.”

However, CNN reports, based on official sources, that Marquez, “the former neighbor and friend of Farook, told investigators that both men conceived an attack in 2012 also in California, but they abruptly abandoned the plan.”

According to CNN, Marquez told investigators that part of the reason the two didn’t carry out their plans was that around that time ,they were spooked by unrelated FBI arrests of four local men charged with attempting to travel abroad to carry out jihad.

Marquez was the legal purchaser of two AR-15 variants used in the San Bernardino terror attacks. He is not yet a suspect in those attacks, though CNN reports are unsure whether he is talking about the 2012 attack to cover up a possible role in last week’s attack.

    CNN also reports:

Marquez converted to Islam and attended mosque sermons on and off for a couple years, said Azmi Hasan, who has served as facility manager of the Islamic Society of Corona-Norco since 2000 in Corona, California.

Marquez attended sermons by himself but stopped coming about two years ago. Syed Rizwan Farook’s sister and brother-in-law also attended the mosque but that he’d never seen Marquez in their company, Hasan said.

The Los Angeles Times also reports that Marquez was married to Farook’s brother’s wife’s sister (i.e. his sister-in-law’s sister).

Last Friday, Breitbart News reported that San Bernardino attacker Farook attended the Dar Al Aloom Al Islamyah mosque, but mosque leaders tried to distance themselves from Farook during a press conference. They repeatedly emphasized that Farook stopped attending the mosque a few months back. The mosque leaders directed further press questions to the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).

When asked by Breitbart News whether the FBI had inquired into others in the mosque’s community, the repeated, adamant reply was, ‘No comment.”

Marquez, whom U.S. officials had difficulty contacting after the attack, has since been answering some questions for the FBI according to FBI officials. Marquez is the last known purchaser of the two AR-15 variant rifles. Officials continue to state to news outlets, including Breitbart News, that the nature of Marquez’s transfer of the two weapons to the attackers is something they are questioning, but have said that they do not yet know.

An official with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) told Breitbart News that since the FBI has declared the case a terror investigation, the flow of information is more restricted.

On Sunday evening, speaking to the nation from the Oval Office, President Barack Obama said there was no evidence of a conspiracy, at home or abroad, between Farook and Malik on the one hand, and other individuals on the other. That assertion has now been thrown into doubt.

Immigration sham marriage..Why couldn't "Romero" sponsor her if they lived together as husband and wife?

San Bernardino plot thickens: 'Nerdy' neighbor who bought guns for San Bernardino shooter and may have planned earlier 2012 attack with Farook was also married to terrorist's sister-in-law (but she lived with another man)

    • Enrique Marquez is being questioned in wake of San Bernardino killings
    • He was close friends and an ex-neighbor of gunman Syed Rizwan Farook
    • Now documents show pair were also related to each other by marriage
    • Marquez was married to Mariya Chernykh, a Russian, whose sister had earlier wed Syed Raheel Farook, the brother of the San Bernardino killer
    • But marriage could have been a sham as pair did not share an address
    • Chernykh lived with another man, Oscar Romero, used his last name online, and posted pictures with little girl who appears to be their daughter
    • News comes as it was revealed Farook may have been planning attack on a California school in 2011 or 2012 alongside Marquez

As the FBI probes whether the marriage between Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik was arranged by a terror group, questions have been raised over the union of another couple linked to the killers.

Earlier today it was revealed that Enrique Marquez, the 'nerdy' best friend of Farook who bought the assault rifles used in last week's atrocity, was married to Farook's sister-in-law Mariya Chernykh.

The relationship may have been a sham, however, as Chernykh regularly posted images of herself with another man, Oscar Romero, along with pictures of a girl the pair refer to as their daughter.

The new link between Marquez and Farook emerged from reports which show a complex string of relationships tying the two together.

Documents show that Marquez was married to Mariya Chernykh (left) the sister of Tatiana (right) who wed Farook's brother Syed Raheel Farook in 2011, making the trio related by marriage

According to an ABC News investigation, Russian-born Chernykh came to the U.S. in 2009 in order to visit her sister Tatiana, who was already living legally in this country.

Tatiana had settled in the U.S. after marrying Syed Raheel Farook, decorated Navy-veteran brother of California gunman Syed Rizwan Farook, records show.
While Chernykh had not originally intended to stay in America, she found that she liked life in this country - working selling phone cases inside a mall for a kiosk that Tatiana owned.

While she dated other men at first, eventually Chernykh was introduced to Marquez, though exactly how they met is a mystery.
The pair eventually got married in November 2014, with Raheel Farook and Tatiana acting as witnesses, documents show

On a subsequent citizenship application, Raheel Farook is shown acting as a guarantor for Marquez, vouching that he had enough money to support his new spouse.

Marquez was also known to be a close friend of Syed Rizwan Farook, with one neighbor telling journalists that the pair had close since childhood.

Marquez was also known to be close friends of Rizwan Farook (left) before he launched his massacre a week ago today alongside wife Tashfeen Malik (right)

While Farook and Malik are believed to have bought the handguns they used during their massacre themselves, Marquez is believed to have bought the larger assault-style rifles

At one point the pair lived next door to one-another in Riverside, California, before Farook moved to Redlands, where he was living at the time of the attack, police said.

Even after the move, Farook was a common site at Marquez' house, often going there to practice his hobby of working on cars, locals said.

Despite having close links to both Farook brothers, Marquez appears to have been markedly more distant with his 'wife' Chernykh.

ABC reports that Chernykh's was very close to another man by the name of Oscar Romero in the time she was supposed to have been with Marquez.
Records show that Chernykh shared an address with Romero, rather than with Marquez, and that the pair frequently posed for pictures together on social media sites.

On one of his Russian social media accounts, Romera refers to Chernykh as his wife, while several of her Russian accounts show that she was using his last name.

The pair also appeared with a little girl who they referred to as their daughter, though all mention of the girl stops around two months before Chernykh married Marquez.

The emotional toll the apparently sham union had on Marquez is perhaps another reason he checked himself into a mental health facility the day after the attacks in San Bernardino.

A friend of Marquez said that on the night before the atrocity, Marquez sent him a message 'about relationships. How one person loves the other one more than -- you know, it's more one-sided than them together. Does that make sense?'

While Marquez (left and right) married Chernykh last year, social media profiles show that she was very close to another man, Oscar Romero, at the same time

While Marquez (pictured) was married to Chernykh, the pair did not share an address - instead she lived with Romero, used his last name in some online profiles, and posed with a girl they said was their daughter

The emotional strain of the apparently sham union could have contributed to Marquez checking himself into a mental hospital following the shootings, as a friend said he sent messages about his relationships in the lead-up to the massacre

Michael Stone (pictured), one of Marquez's friends, says he also made a disturbing comment about Muslims ready to carry out attacks before the shooting

Michael Stone, one of Marquez's friends, told Good Morning America that the Muslim convert made concerning statements in the lead up to the attack.

'He said something along the lines of there's Muslims in our own backyard just ready to go haywire and attack and we didn't think nothing of it,' Stone said.
On the night of the attack itself, Marquez posted on Facebook, saying: 'I'm very sorry guys. It was a pleasure.' He checked into a mental health facility the following day.

Farook, the U.S.-born son of Pakistani immigrants, and Malik, who was born in Pakistan and spent much of her life in Saudi Arabia, died in a shootout with police several hours after the attack in San Bernardino, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

Raheel Farook, the older brother who became the brother-in-law of Marquez, served in the U.S. Navy, joining in 2003 shortly after graduating from high school.

Federal agents raided Marquez' home in Riverside, California, on Saturday. Marquez was being interviewed on Tuesday, a law enforcement official said.

Evidence emerged today showing that Marquez may also have been plotting another attack with Farook back in 2011 or 2012 at a school in California.

Following his death in a gun battle with police after the massacre at Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino last Wednesday, investigators reportedly found multiple photos on Farook''s cell phone depicting Carter High School in the city of Rialto.

Working as an environmental health inspector for San Bernardino County for five years, Farook had repeatedly visited Carter and other schools in the area.
The images on Farook's phone were exterior shots of the school, which has about 2,500 students.

Search and seizure: FBI agents executed a search warrant at Enrique Marquez's home on December 5

It is unknown if the damage, including the smashed garage pictured above, occurred during the raid or prior to the raid

Shattered glass: Several windows of Marquez's home were also broken. A large black curtain and cardboard boxes were seen through one window

Ransacked? One of Marquez's neighbors said she saw enforcement break windows and use a torch to get in the garage

Susan Klein-Rothschild, a nine-year veteran of the Santa Barbara Public Health Department, told Fox News that it is common for inspectors to photograph areas where food is being prepared and served, but that it is highly unusual for them to take pictures of the school building.

The Sun Bernardino Sun reported that Farook had inspected 10 schools alone in the San Bernardino City Unified School District in October and November 2015.

As a precaution, authorities sent in bomb-sniffing dogs to one of those schools, Arroyo Valley High School the day after the shooting rampage that killed 14 and wounded 21 others. The sweep of the campus has not turned up anything suspicious.

On Monday, FBI agents also searched Carter High School.

Farook's neighbor, Enrique Marquez, who is also related to him through marriage, told investigators that he and the 28-year-old gunman had been planning an attack in 2012 in California, but in the end they scrapped their plans following unrelated FBI arrests of four people accused of trying to travel abroad to take part in jihad, US officials told CNN.

Raheel Farook married Tatiana, then known as Tatiana Gigliotti, on September 10, 2011, the documents show.

Two neighbors of Marquez told Reuters they never saw him with a woman.

'I saw no sign of him having a wife - it was only his mom in the house,' said Lori Aguirre, who lives across the street and said she knew Marquez because he sometimes drove her son to and from school.a

'I only saw him going to work or coming home alone. It would be a big surprise if he was married,' she said.

This was echoed by another neighbor, who said he did not know Marquez. 'I never saw any young woman around. Only his mom,' said the man, who declined to be named.

A third neighbor, however, said he had seen Marquez with a woman. 'I don't know if they were legally married, but I saw him with someone,' said the neighbor, who also declined to be named.

Employees at a Walmart Supercenter in Corona, California, 20 minutes by car from Riverside, said Marquez has been working there as an asset protection and customer specialist for about six months. He was last seen at the store on November 29, they said.

Ashlee Sims, 25, a security guard at the Walmart, on Sunday described Marquez as 'weird' and 'awkward.' He is quiet, but likes to go out and party, Sims said.
