Taking away the jobs isn't enough.

You haven't heard it on the news, but I am convinced certain states of our country are plunging into a recession. I know several people getting laid off in Arizona and several companies will be continue to cut jobs right after the holidays. I am very suspicious as to why there are absolutely no stories on this.

Also, I've heard priviledged information that developers are no longer buying land in Arizona at least until 2010. That means construction jobs will be gone. So has there been a decrease in the population of illegals in Arizona? Somehow I doubt that. Even though jobs are decreasing for everyone - the illegals aren't leaving. Obviously they are staying for other reasons - the BENEFITS.

Has anyone noticed that Arnolds socialistic healthcare plan will cover most RESIDENTS?

We aren't going to get rid of illegals by just getting rid of jobs, it has to be the whole package...schooling, welfare, healthcare. Even though they aren't motivated to learn english they have figured out how to mooch the system better than most Americans. It's all or nothing.

Yes, it needs to be a package deal - but jobs are a start. It will take longer for them to leave without cutting the benefits, but it will help.

There was a referendum voted on in AZ a few years ago about denying benfits to illegals. We were there when they were discussing it - I totally don't remember what happened about it.

If it passed, maybe a judge stopped it - but maybe it's time for them to get that back on track.

Of course, here in Texas, we seem to meet them at the border with the keys to the bank -

I lived in Arizona and voted on it - Prop. 200. I'm not sure if that is still held up or if it's now being enforced.

I read the article about the illegals leaving arizona - it's posted here in the news section. Dozens of families leaving? I'm not impressed.

Oh, I'm not impressed with all the stories either, didn't mean to imply I was.

I'm not impressed with all the ICE 'roundups', etc.

If everyone they say is leaving actually were leaving, the highways through the border states would be clogged - and the gates on the border would be backed up.

So far, I haven't seen any reports on that.

I think the various state laws are good beginnings - but sometimes I wonder what are they thinking. Why not pass simple laws. Why not simply enforce zoning laws, traffic laws, etc.

This one in AZ, is strange to me. From what I have heard about that governor, there is no way she wants anything done about the illegals and now she is saying 'she didn't know what she was signing'. Also, I read it didn't cover contract labor. Most illegals work as contract labor, if they don't work for cash. There is not a large percentage that actually works as regular employees. So this law does not apply to a huge percentage of the illegals.

I wasn't implying you were impressed, I know none of us are.

Last year at Christmas I happened to be on the road by Tuscon and you would not believe the amount of cars packed with people and crap that are heading to Mexico. Most have junk piled on top of cars and not secured very well, and some have trailers behind cars with no license plate visible. It's quite a site to see and my husband and I joked that if they shut down the border the day after Christmas and only let citizens and legals back in we could probably cut off about 1/3 of them easily. If some illegals are planning on staying in Mexico after Christmas, maybe we will start to see some results in January.

Janet "the dude" Napolitano has been pro-illegals until it ran Arizona into the ground. Since the PEOPLE voted OVERWHELMINGLY for several pieces of legislation against illegals and crime escalated to the point of destroying the state, she was forced to do something about the illegal situation. I'm sure there's all kinds of money issues drying up too due to all the services the illegals are draining. The fact that she did anything shows how Arizona is at a breaking point.

Yep, that is DEFINITELy true------the benefits and anchor baby benefits are also why they are staying!!! If 20 of them are living in one house----with half of them getting foodstamps, welfare, etc. for the anchor babies----they are living just fine!!

I totally agree! Many of the illegals are adamant they won't leave unless life here becomes far worse than life in Mexico or other countries of origin.

The U.S. is heaven to the illegals. Where else can they live and receive all of these benefits? They will not return to their 3rd world cesspools unless we force them.

I have to agree with the OP,the illegals won't feel any financial strain from job loss due to the incoming gov't assistance checks, even if our country goes into a recession they won't feel a thing, their checks will keep rolling in.

It needs to be a package deal - that's for sure - but I do think taking their jobs would make a difference -

But by all means, a package deal.
