Trump ‘Absolutely’ Should Veto Bill with No Border Wall Funding
On 'The Ingraham Angle,' a robust discussion of the looming gov't shutdown — and why POTUS must fulfill his campaign promise
By Kathryn Blackhurst | Tuesday, December 18, 2018
President Donald Trump “absolutely” should shut down the government and veto any spending bill that arrives at his desk this week without full border wall funding, American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp said Monday night on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”
With the prospect of a government shutdown looming, pro-Trump Republicans and resisting Democrats seem to be at an impasse.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) met with Trump last week in the Oval Office to discuss whether or not they could reach a budget agreement before federal funding expires and the partial shutdown commences.
Reporters and cameras captured the first 15 minutes of the raucous meeting, as Trump passionately demanded full border wall funding.
The Democratic leaders adamantly rejected that.
“If we don’t get what we want one way or the other … I will shut down the government,” Trump said, during a segment of the meeting that has been played and replayed many times since then by the media. “I am proud to shut down the government for border security because the people of this country don’t want criminals with lots of problems and drugs pouring into the country.”
Thus far, Schumer and Pelosi haven’t budged.
“Donald Trump is going to have to find some way to fund this wall. He is working with his lawyers to make sure he funds this wall with or without Congress,” Schlapp warned.

When Fox News host Laura Ingraham asked Schlapp if Trump should veto any spending bill or continuing resolution that fails to include complete border wall funding, Schlapp said, “Absolutely.”
“There’s nothing wrong with the Republican Party finally making it clear to the Democrats that there’s not a white flag every time we have a spending fight,” Schlapp said. “And that’s essentially what we have learned over the years … that we lose these budget fights, shutdowns are bad for our party, so we’re just going to not fight anymore.”
“And I think that is one of the biggest mistakes that my party has learned,” Schlapp continued. “And I’d like the president to stand up and realize that if we don’t get it on a funding measure, no other measures pass.”

Ingraham slammed Republicans for failing to secure full border wall funding during the two years they held majorities in both chambers of Congress under Trump. With the Democrats taking the House majority in January, securing border wall funding must happen before then, if at all.
“The Republicans were elected to Congress to move the Trump agenda. And in many cases, they have frustrated it,” Ingraham said. “They had Congress for the past two years. They should have done this the first 30 days in Congress.”

“The people in the White House cannot allow this. They should not stand for this. Bring on the shutdown,” Ingraham added. “For all the bluster and the worry about a government shutdown, we all should realize one thing: With the exception of tax reform … and VA reform, which was good and needed, the government has essentially been shut down — shut down to the will of the American people — for two years.”
Said Schlapp, “If you look at just part of what’s going on with this whole question of immigration, it doesn’t matter what your politics are. You can’t look at our southern border and not feel like this is [a] travesty of American principles and the rule of law to not solve the problem.”
Trump took to Twitter earlier Monday to increase the pressure on Congress, writing, “Anytime you hear a Democrat saying that you can have good Border Security without a Wall, write them off as just another politician following the party line. Time for us to save billions of dollars a year and have, at the same time, far greater safety and control!”
