HUNDREDS OF PROTESTERS GREET DONALD TRUMP IN SAN JOSE

    SAN JOSE --

Between 300 and 400 protesters have gathered outside Donald Trump's rally in San Jose on Thursday night, but police are keeping them mostly separate from the supporters waiting to hear the presumptive Republican presidential nominee speak.

The protesters are gathered about a half-block from the San Jose Convention Center where Trump was slated to speak at 7 p.m.

Supporters are walking by the protesters on their way in, but about 30 police officers are guarding the crowd.

Adam Rivas, a 22-year-old community college student who was born and raised in San Jose, was holding a spray-painted sign that read "Dump Trump."

Rivas said he was particularly disturbed by Trump's remarks about Mexicans. "For any one Mexican here he bashes, there are about 20 Mexicans out there who are hard-working and just doing their job," he said.

It's not only supporters attending the inside of the rally. Mike Kennedy, who works in development and lives in nearby Los Gatos said as he walked in that he "came to see the spectacle, and see Trump's minions."

Trump's appearance in Sacramento last night drew a very small group of protesters that was dwarfed by thousands of supporters. But California campaign rallies last week saw some clashes between protesters, supporters and police that led to several arrests.

Trump is expected to respond to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's foreign policy speech in San Diego earlier in the day.

The rally comes five days before the California primary, which will be just a formality for Trump with all other Republican contenders out of the race.

SAN JOSE -- Tensions flared outside a Donald Trump rally tonight as police in riot gear broke up several fights between protesters and Trump supporters who were heading home shortly after 7:45 p.m.

Several protesters jumped on cars, while others burned red "Make America Great" hats and took selfies with the charred remains.

There was also plenty of verbal jousting as several Trump supporters told protesters waving Mexican flags or wearing sombreros to "go back to Mexico.

Crowds of protesters grew into the hundreds as Trump spoke for nearly 50 minutes. Many carried makeshift signs, while others cursed him and chanted "Dump Trump."

Inside the hall, Trump shot back at Hillary Clinton to the delight of several thousand raucous fans in San Jose, mocking her for claiming Thursday that he was too "thin-skinned" to be commander-in-chief.

"I watched Hillary today. It was pathetic. It was so sad to watch," Trump told a crowd of about 4,000 that filled up about one-third of the football field-sized South Hall at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.

"When you watch her today, she does not look presidential. This is not a president. Four more years of this stuff and we're not going to have a country anymore."

Trump's was responding to a scathing speech by Clinton in San Diego, during which she mocked his foreign policy credentials and warned that he lacked the temperament to be entrusted with life and death decisions.

"Donald Trump's ideas aren't just different -- they are dangerously incoherent," Clinton said "They're not even really ideas — just a series of bizarre rants, personal feuds and outright lies."

The escalating war of words Thursday foreshadows what appears certain to be a brutal presidential campaign that is already in high gear as Californians prepare to vote in Tuesday's presidential primary.

Trump was uncharacteristically tempered with two protesters, including one who stood near the front of the crowd holding a Bernie Sanders sign.

"Darling," Trump said, "there's no way he can win, but keep your sign high."

To another, he told security to "leave him alone. Don't hurt him. See the way I said that? I've learned."

San Jose police alerted officers on Wednesday that it would be all hands on deck to keep the peace. But even though 7,500 tickets had been issued for the event the massive crowd that Trump had promised never materialized. That, however, didn't stop Trump from repeatedly insisting that cameras pan to show a mostly empty hall.

"Look how many people we have here tonight," he said, noting that he was competing with the Golden State Warriors playing in the NBA Finals. "This is unbelievable."

Many people in attendance adorned themselves in red, white and blue and hoisted Trump signs. One woman in the thick of the crowd held a sign saying "Mexican Millennial Woman 4 Trump." Another read "Muslims for Trump."

The crowd included retired engineers and teachers, military veterans, students and blue collar workers, including a woman who manages a San Jose gas station. Many echoed the sentiment of Trump supporters across the country: They like his brash talk and his promises to build a wall along the Mexican border and create more American jobs.

"I've never see anything like this in California and I'm glad someone is here representing Republicans in California," said Carlo Mecozzi, a 28-year-old accountant from Santa Cruz wearing the Trump "Make American Great Again" ball cap.

The diversity in the audience was apparent as Trump launched into his trademark call for Mexico to pay for a giant pre-fab concrete wall along the border. Many people stayed silent while other Trump fans chanted "Build the Wall, Build the Wall."

If Clinton's broadside Thursday was an attempt to turn Trump's bombast into a liability, he showed no sign of toning down his stump speech.

Trump eviscerated Clinton over her email scandal, insisting that she was cozying up to President Obama to avoid jail time. "Hillary Clinton used to hate Obama," he said. "Now, it's 'Yes, sir. Mr. President sir.' Folks, honestly, she is guilty as hell. The fact that they even allow her to participate in this race is a disgrace to the United States."

Trump's visit to San Jose -- his only Bay Area stop -- comes as he is barnstorming the state ahead of Tuesday's primary, where he has no competition and Clinton is facing an insurgent challenge from Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Trump called Sanders "a nut job," moments before insisting that many of his supporters will back him in November. "Bernie Sanders and I agree on one thing that the U.S. is getting ripped off on trade," he said.

Trump also insisted that he will contest California despite recent polls that show him trailing either Democrat by double digits.

"I've been told by all these brilliant guys you can't win California," he said. "I think we can. And if we win California, the election is over. We win. And then we will make America great again.

    Believe me."

I can't help but recall conversations I had with people who were anti-Trump and pro-cruz, before Trump became the presumptive nominee, that somehow Trump was the greatest friend Hillary ever had and was secretly running so that Hillary wouldn't get any negative attacks from some other republican candidate in the general election, that he would just sit back, throw the election to Hillary without making any serious attempts to win the election and never say anything negative about her. I didn't believe that. But now with all the negative things he's been saying about Hillary, I think those people are realizing they were wrong.
