66 driver's license violators cited at Vista checkpoint

    (IN ONLY 2 HOURS)

    APRIL 26, 2007

VISTA -- Authorities nabbed 66 motorists for driver's license violations during a multiagency traffic checkpoint in Vista on Wednesday afternoon, sheriff's officials said.

The two-hour operation began at 3 p.m. in the 300 block of Melrose Drive and targeted vehicles entering the Vista court complex, sheriff's Sgt. Mike Petrofsky said in a written statement.

Of about 1,000 vehicles to pass through the checkpoint, 66 drivers were stopped and cited for driving without a license or with a suspended license, Petrofsky said. Authorities also impounded 60 vehicles because of license violations, he said.

Two of the drivers stopped were also arrested for outstanding warrants on earlier drunken driving offenses, Petrofsky said. A third motorist was arrested on suspicion of false impersonation.

The checkpoint was hosted by the Vista Sheriff's Station with the participation of the county Sheriff's Department, county probation department and police departments from Escondido, Carlsbad and Chula Vista.

Could you imagine how many they'd catch late at night? I propose all local law enforcement agencies do this on a regular basis. Let's get the illegal aliens, unlicensed and non-insured, drunk drivers and other criminals off our roads! Deport the illegal aliens, lock up the criminals, and impound all the vehicles seized. They are endangering me and my family plus the rest of the law-abiding citizens in our communities here in North County."

(IN ONLY 2 HOURS) wrote on April 26, 2007 6:55 AM:"Imagine if the police had check points like this every day and all day. I must assume that the 66 drivers caught during this two-hour period also did not have insurance, nor were they properly trained and educated on how to drive a car. Others may have been driving under the influence or had lost their license due to previous convictions. HELLO PEOPLE! These are the same roads you drive on with your families!"

THIS SHOULD BE FRONT PAGE NEWS ! wrote on April 26, 2007 6:59 AM:"Every day there are stories like this one! And without exception they are buried in the local section of the newspaper. Even when there are deaths due to accidents or hit-and-runs, the story does not rate much. Maybe if the American Public were aware of just how serious our road safety is deteriorating, then the problems would be addressed. Having these two-hour checkpoints is helping, but the problem is continuing and growing at the same time."

Thieves rob Vista catering truck driver today

    By: North County Times
    APRIL 27, 2007

VISTA ---- A catering truck driver was robbed shortly before dawn today in the Vista area, possibly by the same thieves who held him up a week ago about the same time and place, sheriff's officials said.

"We suspect it's the same suspects that did both (robberies), but we can't confirm that they're related to any others in the area," said detective Sgt. Art Wager of the Vista Sheriff's Station.

He said an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen during the latest theft about 5:30 a.m. at the strawberry fields in the 2400 block of East Vista Way in the unincorporated area.

Although the victim first said a handgun had been used today, Wager said, deputies were told later no gun was seen.

"He said he assumed they had one, because they had one last week," said the sergeant.

The robbers were described as two young Latino men who wore white masks.
