What's the opposition saying? Find out. Seminar now open.

Welcome to the "INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW!" Seminar. Please take a seat.

Several people on the forums have asked for translations of Spanish language phrases and words. What is the opposition saying on their own sites? Easy. At the end of this seminar you will be able to find out all by yourself. Granted, you won't get a word by word professional translation, but it will be free and "good enough to get the gist of it". The sites you find may inform you, anger you (so what else is new?) or just give you ideas. And you won't have to study Spanish, for that's not the intent. Think of it as gathering counter-intelligence.

First let's start with a dictionary, or translating website, such as http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr Next, choose a key word or term to translate into Spanish, and get the equivalent. "Racist" become "racista" etc, illegal=ilegal, immigrant=inmigrante, forum=foro, border (boundary)=frontera, --jornalero=day worker, rights=derechos, vote=votar, lucha=fight etc. etc. When you find one with diacritical marks (such as señor) paste the word entire into Google.

Using a Spanish key word or term, you'll be able to find and translate entire web pages at Google. For instance just enter the word "ANTIMIGRANTES" (anti-immigrant) and see. Google will give you links AND translate the pages you find! When entering foreign words, Spanish for instance, Google pops up a "translate this page" button. So even if you know NO Spanish at all it's fairly simple. Using this incredible service we can read what is written in the Spanish press, media, forums etc.

If you stumble upon a Spanish language page another way, one without a "translate" button, enter the URL into one of dozens of free online sites such as http://translate.dc.gov/en/websites/url_translator.html You can check this option by going to this URL and then copying and pasting the URL into Babelfish or other. BTW this is an active forum on immigration. http://foro.univision.com/univision/boa ... nmigracion You may need to re-enter the URL for each page you visit, but that's easy.

I found the next site while searching for the word "antimigrantes" Enter that term into Google and you will find the following. It will show up as a link, of course and you will be able to click on it
"Grupos antimigrantes se movilizan en EU - El Universal - Primera - [ Translate this page ]"

Congratulations! This ends the seminar on "Translating Spanish Language Pages" You've all graduated with high marks. Now you can surf all the Spanish language pages as you want. Their newspapers, Forums, etc.. are no longer "just Greek" to you. Now isn't that better than being in the dark?

We can choose to add "corrective" comments to their guest books , forums, etc. I'd add them in English, there should be at least one person there who can understand the official language of this country!

*****Would somebody please BTTT this post once in a while for newcomers to Alipac ? Thanks in advance*****
