Des Moines, IA (AHN) - The numbers of reported cases of the mumps continues to rise in the Midwest United States, spreading now to Colorado.

Iowa is currently at the center of the outbreak, where the state's Department of Public Health says there are 1,120 confirmed, probable and suspect cases, coming from 69 out of Iowa's 99 counties.

In Colorado, the Department of Public Health and Environment confirms that a 45-year-old woman from Douglas County tested positive for the disease.

Officials say that despite Colorado typically reporting several cases a year of the mumps, this woman had recently visited Iowa.

Dr. Ned Calonge, the state's chief medical officer explains, "This one case does not indicate we have a mumps outbreak in Colorado."

"But, it is an important warning signal for parents, who should make certain their children are fully immunized against all childhood diseases, including mumps."

U.S. health officials say that these cases represent the worst outbreak in 20 years, while authorities still have no solid answer as to what started it.

According to the Houston Chronicle, mumps is spread by coughing and sneezing. The most common symptoms are fever, headache and swollen salivary glands under the jaw. It can lead to more severe problems, such as hearing loss, meningitis and swollen testicles, which can lead to infertility. It does not respond to antibiotics.

With all the statistics on diseases brought into this country by illegal aliens crossing the border illegally into the U.S., I truly believe that illegal aliens recently arrived illegally possibly from across the Mexico border may have brought mumps into the country.

As a child, I had mumps, so I don't have to worry about it.

Another benefit? to the U.S. people from illegal alien criminals?

Not so.
This strain of mumps is so virulent that people who aren't recently immunized are advised to be immunized again. Meaning adults. Having contacted mumps as a child is the same thing as immunization but now there is an immunization so we don't have to get mumps again. I'm still deciding if I want to get the shot or not.

I have seen this same topic in other forums and I have asked the same question I am asking now, why didnt the mmr vaccine work? Some people from the CDC have said that the MMR vaccine is not 100% effective. Where the outbreak came from is not really important. The CDC thinks a college student brought it over from England where there were 55,000 cases of mumps in 2004 - 2005.

So far the MMR vacine has done little to slow the spread of the disease - with one person getting the mumps just a month after their last dose of vaccine. Some reports have stated that 80% of the cases had their recommended two doses of the vaccine.

As more cases were reported in this older age group, the percentage of cases among people who have received the recommended two doses of the mumps-measles-rubella vaccine declined from more than 80% in the first weeks of the outbreak to 54% as of today.

When public health techs where asked as to why the vaccine is so ineffective, they just say "I dont know."

The words "particularly virulent" spell it out nicely to me-- why the vaccine didn't work. Also, isn't mumps one of the things you carry around for a couple weeks exposing people to before you actually exhibit symptoms? Therefore, it is probably too late for vaccines.

So far, I haven't heard of them in my area, surpsisingly enough, but by the time they spill the beans it will be too late.

From the reports we got here, it began in Iowa and Minnesota. And they interviewed a woman who spread them. A dumb blonde business woman who flew from state to state sick as a dog.

I think that mumps and chicken pox are two things that you spread BEFORE you have symptoms. Some measles as well.
