Trump, Saving His Campaign After War Hero Remarks

Donald Trump has a major case of foot in mouth. But it can be fixed before it relegates him to political oblivion, for he has said things that can be construed as insulting to the base of his supporters.

This is what he must do immediately:

Do not attempt to answer his enemies with nuances of language and meanings.

Contact all of the major military veterans organization and apologize directly to them for his injudicious language about captured military personnel. He must be explicit in saying that, of course, POWs are heroes.

Then he should make the rounds of all the major radio talk show programs with the same message.

Then he must hold a news conference where he explicitly apologizes to all veterans for his remarks, emphasizing that he did not intend to demean captured service men.

He must run TV ads to that effect as well. He can turn the controversy into an attack on his antagonist by stating that it is necessary for him purchase ads because he knows the major “news” media will not give him fair honest treatment, that it is necessary for him to pay for a fair public hearing.
Trump must apologize immediately before this thing becomes part of the public folklore. Once it sets in it will become impossible to undo it.

The average voter understands from his own experience that often people say things that come out all wrong and do not reflect what they really think. If Trump fails to make an unequivocal apology, he will be view as arrogant. He should say “Hey we are all human and we all make really bad mistakes. I have just shown how very human I am. Veterans all, I am truly sorry if I have inadvertently insulted you.” This is called “walking back” ones remarks and everyone in politics has had to do it on occasion (except Obama)

His apologies should be tied to an attack on his antagonist as hypocrites who use a double standard and feign indignation. There should be an endless supply of incidents to use in support of this.

Specifically, John McCain, publicly called those opposed to amnesty and want controlled borders crazy or something like that. The American Legion has a policy statement opposing amnesty and open borders. Mr. (war hero) McCain has just insulted all his fellow veterans who support the American Legion’s policies on illegal aliens. Should Mc Cain not publicly apologize to the American Legion? Of course Mc Cain's nasty remarks will be buried by the Democrat/Marxist “news” media, who are now in a feeding frenzy to destroy Trump.

If you see the film clip of Trumps remarks about John McCain you will see a fleeting moment when he backs away from his first statement implying that POWs are not war heroes. His mistake was failing to be emphatic that he was not saying POWs are not war heroes. He needs to do that now, loud and clear.

Bill Clinton saved his political career and was re-elected after previously loosing a gubernatorial election. He apologized to Arkansas voters for unpopular leftist policies when he was governor. Thus he came back from political defeat.

Apologies do work, and they can save the political campaign of Donald Trump if he uses them judiciously and turns the debate once again to a referendum on the activities of his antagonist.

Of course it must since the writer didn't even affix his (or her) name to it. No way to even verify if it was written by a military member.
