RE: Latest poll on Legal Immigration

I joined ALIPAC because I thought it was a group that was against illegal immigration. I felt that people who had gone through the system legally and U.S. citizens were being unfairly treated. That being said, I am quite disappointed in the latest poll results. It appears that a majority of this group are against any immigration at all. I fail to see their logic. On the one hand, they are saying they don't want illegal immigration, but on the other hand they want to discourage legal immigration. Can't have it both ways folks. Wake up and smell the coffee.....

Welcome arsr4, we are not against legal immigration, however; we cannot keep letting in more people until we reduce the number of illegal aliens in this country. The immigration system needs to be streamlined for LEGAL immigrants and our laws need to be enforced on illegal migration.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello arsr4,

We certainly can have it both ways. We can easily favor reductions in legal immigration levels as well as opposition to illegal immigration if we chose to go that route as an organization.

I certainly can respect your opinion on these matters, but your statement that we can't have it both ways is not correct.

What we are doing now is gaging the opinions of our supporters and the national scene.

There are many people that will not support ALIPAC because we support legal immigration at current levels.

This debate is constantly shifting and clearly the mood of the nation is moving against current legal immigration levels, probably in reaction to so much illegal immigration.

We will continue to run the poll and gather information and consider adjusting our platform to meet the new political climate and represent the majority of Americans on this issue accordingly.

    arsr4:

    1. Welcome aboard.

    2. Well, let me try to relay the sentiment of a great many of our posters here - based solely on my very own empirical observations about how *I think* most feel here..

I believe that people want 2 basic things:

a). For illegal immigration to be eliminated entirely (or to some extent very nearing that level)

    and

b). For all legal immigration to be beneficial to the country. Having said that, a lengthy debate could be had encompassing all the nuances of definitions, labor studies, discussions of uniculturalism vs. multiculturalism etc. While there certainly is a strong argument and benefit in allowing
in legal immigrants - the real question(s) posed become - Who? and in Which numbers?

Of course, there are some who think that posing those very questions are somehow an affront to immigrants and appear to be unwelcoming. However, I could not more strongly disagree. But, digging into the subject matter a bit more, with regard to the Who? question, many believe that as a rule, those allowed in should be relatively highly-skilled and provide a net 'plus' to our society and economy. Others believe that the continuum of social strata be represented in the newcomer population.

Many other industrialized, Western nations (to include Australia, New Zealand, etc) use point-based systems - whereby, every potential immigrant is assigned a relative ranking which objectively quantifies the potential for that individual to benefit the host society. There are many here that believe the time is past due to adopt a more objective, and likely, efficient method to decide who shall be allowed in to work and live here.

As things sit now, there is ample evidence to suggest that large powerful domestic and foreign economic interests have gamed and manipulated the system to further their narrow economic interests to the detriment of US national interests and the well-being of citizens. There have been many, many documented abuses of skilled labor visa programs (H-1b, L-1, etc) which repeated demonstrate that foreign workers are being imported solely to displace skilled domestic workers. I'll kindly remind at this point - immigration (specifically, the ability to work in the US) is not a right, but a privilege.

So, in summary, I regret that you feel the way you say. Indeed, we have several posters here that are themselves IMMIGRANTS - as in, by definition, LEGAL IMMIGRANTS. As a rule, legal immigrants are welcome. What is unwelcome, is when the official immigration system is manipulated, unregulated, in ways that ultimately harm US citizens. The bottom line to many folks is that they want the current system halted until integrity can be restored and then we can consider resuming the legal immigration system in appropriate numbers which can be regulated, enforced and managed properly.

OK, well, that's just my 0.02 cents - take for whatever it's worth.

Thanks, miguelina. I totally agree with your last sentence. I also feel that if the oppostion sees a poll biased in this direction, they could it as ammo., that's all.

    ps. I love your avatar....

Since our current immigration laws have been totally ignored... I believe we need a TIME OUT for all immigration. When MASSIVE immigration is allowed...as we can see... assimilation goes OUT THE WINDOW!
Our immigration laws are BEING ABUSED!!!!!! AND IGNORED!!!
We need our immigration laws enforced before we can continue allowing ANY immigration, IMO!
Please help save America for our children and grandchildren... they are counting on us. THEY DESERVE the goodness of AMERICA not to be given to those who are stealing our children's future! ... and a congress who works for THEM!

I do not worry much about our opposition. They spend most of their time reacting to us and what we are getting done, not the other way around.

Welcome asrs4. This website has certainly given me a chance to vent my frustration at the current situation with illegals, who knows how many millons. Every legal immigrant I know is livid about the illegal situation, about which our government will do almost nothing except put bandages and temporary splints on a problem they could have controlled years ago.
We have droughts in many areas of the country and floods where no water is needed; our roads, emergency rooms, schools and social services are under enormous pressure if not failing entirely; we have a fuel crisis, and food prices are rising because of ethanol and horrible weather; highly-educated Americans are losing their jobs to outsourcing or insourcing of cheaper visa-clad workers; there is a mortgage meltdown in the housing market, and talk is already out that the credit card debts are the next crisis. I could go on but I won't.
At this moment in our country's history, I just ask: how much more pressure can we take? Perhaps that explains a little of the results of the poll.
