Enough Already! Stop the DREAM Act
Enough Already! Stop the DREAM Act
By Bobby Eberle

This isn't a dream... it's more like a nightmare. First, we have the Democrats putting off action on upcoming tax increases until the very last minute. Some on the far left are still not on board. They would rather engage in class warfare than do what is right. Now, Democrats in the House have passed the so-called DREAM act which rewards illegal aliens with citizenship and is part of Obama's comprehensive immigration reform. Enough already! Enough of the pandering... enough of the politics. Americans want smaller, more accountable government that serves American citizens. It's a simple concept, isn't it?
As FOXNews.com reports, http://politics.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/ ... n-measures Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives passed the DREAM Act on Wednesday by a vote of 216 to 198. On the Senate side, a vote is scheduled for today, but with enough opposition from grass roots Americans, the measure will likely fail to be brought to the floor.
In short, the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act (boy, they will go to such lengths to make a catchy acronym) focuses on illegal aliens who are attending college or joining the military as a path to citizenship. In an analysis of the bill, FOXNews.com explains it this way: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/12 ... dream-act/
Immigrants who were brought to the United States before the age of 16 would be eligible for conditional status for up to 10 years if they've lived in the country for at least five years and have graduated from an American high school or obtained a GED.
After 10 years, those immigrants can apply for permanent legal status if they've completed two years of college or military service. Previous versions would have granted permanent legal status immediately to those eligible.
According to the analysis, "it would take at least 13 years for immigrants to become U.S. citizens." Thirteen years? The cost is estimated at $6.2 billion per year. And, of course, it's money we do not have.In addition, illegal aliens with criminal records would still be eligible. First of all, any illegal alien has a criminal record... the person is here illegally! Second, according to a GOP memo, http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/12 ... latestnews illegal aliens could still qualify for the DREAM Act even after committing "assault, domestic violence, sexual abuse, reckless driving and various types of fraud."

So, there you have it. If you have a bill that costs $6.2 billion and still takes 13 years, how about this alternative: 1. Enforce the immigration laws we already have. 2. Crack down on employers so that the illegal immigration jobs dry up. 3. Once the jobs dry up, people will go back home, and apply the regular way.
We don't need a DREAM Act for people to pursue the American dream. We need to respect the rule of law, and reward people for doing things right. No, we don't want to punish the child for sins of the father. So, just tell the child, "Here is the right way to do this. Now go do it."
