Sheppard Smith was trying to pronounce the name and spelled it out, I got as close as I could to the actual spelling.

AZ congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shot in Tucson

TUCSON, AZ - U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is in critical condition and in surgery after being shot in the head at a grocery store Saturday morning in Tucson, several media outlets are now reporting.

There are several conflicting reports that Giffords has died, but the communications director for Giffords says she is still alive and in surgery.

The Associated Press reports the shooter has been identified as Jared Laughner.

The AP is also reporting that an unidentified aide to Gifford has died in the shooting.

NPR reports that Giffords was holding a public event called "Congress on Your Corner" at the Safeway store in northwest Tucson when a man came up and started shooting.

The Pima County Sheriff's Office says the shooting happened just after 10 a.m. at the store near Ina and Oracle.

One official added the attack was carried out with an automatic weapon. NPR reports the suspect in the shooting has been arrested.

NPR is also reporting as many as 12 people have been hurt at the scene, including members of Giffords' staff, and that many of them have serious injuries.

Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson, according to the NPR report.

Just before the event started at 10 a.m., Giffords Twitter account sent out the following message, "My 1st Congress on Your Corner starts now. Please stop by to let me know what is on your mind or tweet me later."

Giffords, 40, represents the 8th district of Arizona. She was re-elected to her third term last November.

She was a member of the Arizona House and Senate before coming to Washington.

She first won election to Congress amid a wave of Democratic victories in 2006.

Giffords is NOT dead. A doctor at the hospital was just out in the Press conference and said he expects she will recover although she is still critical.

It is in the news report I brought over ABC 15.com
