Tea Party won't back GOP candidates, backs Democrat

    Tea party for Peters?

North County group calls for 'tactical vote' for Democrat Scott Peters over Republican Carl DeMaio

    By Mark Walker12:49 P.M.OCT. 10, 2014

The North County based Tri-City Tea Party is urging followers vote for Democratic Rep. Scott Peters in the bruising 52nd Congressional District election over GOP challenger Carl DeMaio.

Its recommendation comes as the Peters’ campaign and its supporters continue to portray the openly gay DeMaio as a tea party acolyte who will back its agenda if elected to Congress.

The tea party’s reasons for backing Peters, however, have little to do with each man’s positions.

“Strategical tactical voting — DeMaio will actually do more damage to the GOP platform than will Peters,” the organization said about its rationale for the recommendation.

The group, which backs Republicans in nearly all of its ballot recommendations, is also is refusing to endorse Vista GOP Rep. Darrell Issa in his race against Democrat Dave Peiser. It notes that Issa voted to raise the debt ceiling while 199 other House Republicans opposed doing so.

The Republican Party and House Speaker John Boehner’s backing of DeMaio also has drawn the ire of the Family Research Council and National Organization for Marriage, which calls DeMaio “antithetical to the Republican platform.”

    ENTHUSIASM GAP

The Republican Party of San Diego County commissioned a recent poll that claims likely voters in the 52nd Congressional District are more enthusiastic about supporting its candidates than those from the Democratic Party.

The poll of 400 likely voters conducted by John Nienstedt’s Competitive Edge Research & Communication contends a 16-point enthusiasm advantage for a generic Republican candidate over a generic Democrat.

    MAIL BALLOTS OUT

County Registrar Michael Vu says election workers have wrapped up sending out more than 850,000 mail ballots in advance of the Nov. 4 general election.

Nearly 200 early birds have already returned completed ballots, and Vu expects to see hundreds in not several thousand come back next week.

He’s predicting about 500,000 mail ballots will be cast. The first vote count on election night will come from the mail ballots and should be out just after 8 p.m.

There’s still time to register to vote. The deadline for doing so is Oct. 20; the deadline for getting a mail ballot is Oct. 28.

    WEIL DEPARTING SUPER’S OFFICE

John Weil, the long-time chief of staff to former Supervisor Pam Slater-Price starting in 1992, will be leaving the office of her successor, Supervisor Dave Roberts, at the end of the year.

Weil took on the same role he held with Slater-Price when Roberts was elected in 2012, and is the longest running chief of staff in county history, working with 17 other chiefs over the years.

“I am not retiring, I am leaving the county and I will be seeking another position,” Weil said Friday.

Roberts will use Weil’s help in finding a new chief of staff. Another Roberts aide, Sachiko Kohatsu, is retiring after more than 14 years with the county.

    TWEET OF THE WEEK

Goes to part-time La Jolla resident and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who posted this Friday:
“Figured I’d met plenty of us already, but saw @MeetTheMormons anyway. Surprisingly interesting.”

Romney was referring to a newly released film that profiles six members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Just heard on local TV that these results aren't official or final yet.
The vote count is less than 800 between them.
    There are 46,000 uncounted ballots,
some are provisional ballots and will be challenged.
Both sides already have lawyers involved
and teams to observe ballot counts.
A recount will probably drag this out for weeks or months.

    DeMaio, Peters await vote count

Estimated 46,000 ballots uncounted in contested district

    By Chris Nichols6:27 P.M.NOV. 5, 2014

SAN DIEGO — With an estimated 46,000 ballots still to be counted, the winner in San Diego’s hotly-contested 52nd Congressional District race remained uncertain on Wednesday and may not be known for days.

Republican Carl DeMaio’s 752-vote lead over Democratic Rep. Scott Peters was unchanged from Election Night. No new results were released Wednesday and won’t be until 5 p.m. today at the earliest.

That didn’t stop either candidate from projecting victory in the days ahead.

“We’re pretty confident we’re going to win this thing,” Peters said at his campaign headquarters in Kearly Mesa late Wednesday afternoon. “(Election Night) was a historically bad night for Democrats, turnout was historically low, and the fact that we’re even close is a miracle.”

DeMaio told supporters in an email early Wednesday that he’s “optimistic that victory is in sight.”

San Diego County Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said election staffers are carefully making their way through 180,000 uncounted vote-by-mail and provisional ballots countywide, including the 46,000 in the contested district.

“We are very sensitive to the 52nd Congressional District, so we are focusing our attention on that,” Vu said.

He added that the majority of uncounted ballots in the 52nd will be tallied and presented by 5 p.m. on Monday.

At a morning news conference Wednesday, DeMaio said he and other candidates in other undecided races have been invited to an orientation next week for incoming members of Congress. He said there were about a dozen other candidates across the nation also awaiting a final outcome.

“We were told this morning, ‘Hey, get ready for orientation,” he said at the U.S. Grant hotel.

Whether Peters ultimately wins or loses, he will be heading back to Congress for a lame-duck session to wrap up business for the year before the new Congress is sworn in.

DeMaio is clinging to a lead over Peters with 50.26 percent of the vote to 49.74 percent in returns posted early Wednesday morning.

In raw vote totals, DeMaio has 72,431 and Peters 71,679, a difference of 752 votes.

Political observers said it’s hard to tell which candidate will benefit the most from the vast number of uncounted ballots.

Several said the growing number of people voting by mail, and often at the last moment, has made it more difficult to say how late votes will break.

“Usually in a race like this, the leader stays the leader. But normally there’s not 46,000 ballots left to count,” said Gary Jacobson, a UC San Diego political science professor.

“I wouldn’t concede yet if I was Peters and I wouldn’t claim victory if I was DeMaio,” Jacobson added.

Carl Luna, a political science professor at San Diego Mesa College, estimated the late votes will result in a small shift toward Peters. He said many of the Democratic-leaning, working class voters tend to arrive at the polls late in the day while more affluent, Republican voters often turn ballots in earlier.

“If I was Peters, I would be optimistic,” Luna said.

The situation is somewhat familiar for Peters. In 2012 Peters led Republican Rep. Brian Bilbray by 685 votes after initial Election Night tally. After late ballots were counted days later he won by 6,992 votes. Some analysts cautioned about comparing this midterm election with that presidential-year contest.

John Nienstedt, a local pollster and president of Competitive Edge Research, estimated the race could be headed to a recount.

Asked if he had a message for the candidates about what to conclude from the election results, Nienstedt said he’d borrow a phrase former President Bill Clinton told then Vice President Al Gore during the presidential recount in 2000: “The American people have spoken. It’s just taking us a while to figure out what they’re saying.”

“Really, all you can do is be patient,” the pollster added.

Staff writer David Garrick contributed to this report.

Local TV News now says the democrat, Peters, is ahead by 800 plus votes today, with more votes to be counted by hand.

A recount can't legally be requested until the official results are released in 3 weeks.

Peters Surges Ahead of DeMaio After First Day of Absentee Vote Count

POSTED BY CHRIS JENNEWEIN ON NOVEMBER 6, 2014

    Updated 5:15 p.m. Nov. 6, 2014

Rep. Scott Peters is leading challenger Carl DeMaio in the 52nd Congressional District race by 861 votes out of more than 156,800 ballots counted so far, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters Office.

“We are very pleased with (Thursday’s) result and continue to remain optimistic that Rep. Scott Peters will return to the 114th Congress,” campaign manager MaryAnne Pinter said in a statement.

There are still approximately 15,000 absentee and provisional ballots left to to count.

The high-profile race to represent the 52nd Congressional District and the battle for mayor of Imperial Beach remain too close to call.

Incumbent Imperial Beach Mayor Jim Janney is leading challenger Serge Dedina by just 61 votes.

The next updated results from the registrar will be 5 p.m. Friday.

“I have not conceded this race for IB and the Registrar of Voters has not certified the election,” said Dedina after a meeting Wednesday with Registrar Michael Vu.

A number of school board and other local races around the county could also be affected by the final count. The registrar has an online list of close races.
