MEXICO CITY – Two city police chiefs in the border state of Nuevo Leon were shot to death within hours of each other Monday in gangland-style executions, police and media reports said.

Javier GarcÃ*a RodrÃ*guez, the head of public security and transit in the city of Sabinas Hidalgo, was abducted just before 4 p.m. as he arrived for a meeting at city hall. Mr. GarcÃ*a had parked his SUV and was getting out when armed men in two black Suburbans intercepted him and forced him into one of their vehicles, the Internet site of the Mexico City daily newspaper Reforma reported Monday night. Mr. GarcÃ*a’s body was found on the side of the road a few miles from city hall with a gunshot to the head, police said.

While police had no suspects or motives Monday night, Sabinas Hidalgo is 74 miles south of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, a violent stronghold of the Gulf drug cartel and its enforcement arm, the Zetas.

A police officer in Sabinas Hidalgo, Francisco Garza, said the killing had taken the city by surprise.

“It makes you very scared, because he had barely arrived at city hall and they killed him. Yes, I’m afraid,â€
