United States Coast Guard and Border Protection agents say they have seized approximately 306 pounds of cocaine concealed among a shipment of cocoa beans from the Dominican Republic.

The drugs, which have an estimated street value of US$5.5 million, and other evidence seized during the operation, have been turned over to the Homeland Security Investigations for further analysis and investigation.

The coast guard reports that a team was conducting cargo examinations aboard the cargo ship Michaela, when they discovered three duffel bags that were being stowed among a shipment of cocoa beans.

It says a search revealed 125 brick-like objects that tested positive for the properties of cocaine.

The acting captain of the Port of New York and New Jersey Jeffrey Dixon says the seizure prevents a large quantity of drugs from getting in the hands of children.
