Army soldiers rescue 47 alleged kidnap victims in Reynosa

Mexican army soldiers rescued 47 alleged kidnap victims and seized more than 220 pounds of cocaine during operations Monday in Reynosa.

The rescue of 44 Guatemalan nationals and three Mexicans occurred Tuesday at a residence in the Arboledas neighborhood of Reynosa.

The Mexican defense ministry made the announcement in a statement released Tuesday.

Soldiers also seized 220 pounds of cocaine during a separate operation in the same neighborhood. Four vehicles were also seized during that incident and officials estimated the drugs had a value of $3.8 million.

Soldiers made no arrests during the rescue of the alleged kidnap victims or during the drug seizure.

No injuries were reported during either incident.

Military officials released no information about who may have led the apparent kidnapping ring.

In August, 72 migrants from Central and South America were found killed on a ranch near San Fernando, Tamps. Mexican authorities have blamed that massacre on the Zetas drug cartel.

The Zetas and the Gulf Cartel — the two dominant smuggling groups in northeast Mexico — have been battling for control over smuggling routes into the U.S. for the past year.
