5 Arrested For Making Fake IDs For Illegal Immigrants

    http://www.wral.com/news/10457407/detail.html

RAEFORD, N.C. -- Five men were arrested in an immigration raid in Hoke County over the weekend.

Investigators said the raid stemmed from an anonymous tip that people were making fake driver's licenses and Social Security cards for illegal immigrants.

According to authorities, the men used a machine like one used in DMV offices to make the fake cards. They said the men charged $1,200 for a pack of four IDs.

Authorities also said that some of the Social Security numbers on the cards were real. Authorities said they heard from people whose identities may have been stolen.

"We have people on the West Coast call us saying their licenses have been suspended or revoked or saying they have been arrested for various reasons and they will call us. They said they have never been to Raeford," said Raeford Police Chief Kevin Locklear.

The five men, who are from Mexico, face 270 felony charges. Authorities said the men will be deported to Mexico.

You can't find out if someone is using your stuff illegally until you're in some serious trouble. Is the government reimbursing the legal fees for this fiasco or is that another expense the American people are having to foot?

These and the 5 from Winston Salem last week might put a dent in the fake documents ring.

5 Illegal Immigrants Charged In Fake ID Scheme
    POSTED: 9:59 am EST December 4, 2006
    UPDATED: 6:12 pm EST December 4, 2006

RAEFORD, N.C. -- Raeford police have shut down an operation that allegedly sold fake driver's licenses and Social Security cards to illegal immigrants that seemed so authentic that employees often never know the truth, they said.

Five illegal immigrants from Mexico, were arrested over the weekend after authorities received an anonymous tip last week. They face 270 counts of counterfeit and forgery charges.

They are all in the Hoke County Jail and are expected to be deported to Mexico, authorities said.

Investigators said the men used a Polaroid camera and a printing machine used at driver's license offices to make the fake IDs. They charged $1,200 for a set of four. About 40 forms of ID were found at the men's home.

"They would have their photographs made … they would throw a towel behind their head. It would be the same color as would be on the ID card," Raeford Police Lt. Garrett Gwin said.

Police said they are not yet sure how long the operation has been around or how many people used the service.

Investigators said the suspects randomly picked Social Security numbers, some belonging to people as far away as California.

"We have people on the West Coast call us saying their licenses have been suspended or revoked or saying they have been arrested for various reasons. They said they have never been to Raeford," Raeford Police Chief Kevin Locklear said.

Police said the five men lived together at a house on Edinborough Avenue and have been in the area for several years. They worked at House of Raeford and Mountaire Farms, two poultry plants in the area.

One of the men, Dionicio Hernandez, was named employee of the month at Mountaire Farms. Police said the men used their own fake IDs to get jobs and even health insurance.

More than 1,850 illegal immigrants from North Carolina have been deported from October 2005 to September 2006, according to the regional Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office, which also handles immigration matters in South Carolina and Georgia.

That number is about 40 percent of all people deported in the region.

270 felony charges and they are going to be deported???????? This is ridiculous travesty. Those folks should each do a minimum of 5 years in a federal prison prior to being deported. It has become a well-established fact that deportation means absolutely nothing. These illegals will be back in the United States making more false identification cards within 60 days. When are we going to start punishing criminals vice just sending them home to visit family members?

Enjoy your holiday with family, we'll see you after the New Year!

Suspects In Fake ID Scheme Unlikely To Be Deported Soon

    POSTED: 7:07 pm EST December 5, 2006
    UPDATED: 7:27 pm EST December 5, 2006

RAEFORD, N.C. -- Five illegal immigrants accused of making fake identification cards will probably not be deported until they finish out any prison time they might receive of the alleged crime.

Raeford police uncovered the counterfeiting operation in which the suspects allegedly were making driver's licenses and Social Security cards for other illegal immigrants.

The suspects each face 54 charges of counterfeiting, forgery and identity theft. Each charge carries up to a three-year prison sentence.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement representative said they would immediately begin deportation proceedings after any prison sentence.

The suspects were held Tuesday at the Hoke County Jail, where Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said about 10 to 12 percent of inmates were in the United States illegally for breaking state and local laws.

"We're not getting them for shoplifting or small little larcenies or anything," Peterkin said.

"They are major crimes," such as child abuse and murder, he added.

The Hoke County Jail, which was built to handle about 60 inmates, routinely holds 80. When there is no room left, inmates are taken to other counties.

    Perhaps it was divine intervention.
