PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona officer who stopped a refrigerated trailer found nearly 100 undocumented immigrants crammed inside in near-freezing temperatures.

A tip from federal agents led the Department of Public Safety officer to make the stop to check for faulty equipment Wednesday night on Interstate 19 north of Nogales near the Mexico border.

The officer discovered 97 people, including children as young as 9. The trailer was carrying fruit and chilled to 34-degrees. Temperatures outside were in the mid 80's, according to the National Weather Service in Tucson.

The U.S. Border Patrol and Customs took custody of the undocumented immigrants, who the Department of Public Safety said were from Mexico and Guatemala.

The driver was taken into custody.

NAFTA trucks carrying human cargo. When they find out the name of the company the truck belongs to, they should be banned forever from entering the U.S.

I checked the AZ. News but it didn't have any more info on the driver, truck or company.

it makes me wonder if the media might be covering up the fact that the truck and the driver are a Mexican trucking co. and it would look bad for their plans to continue the Mexican trucking program.

Why does everything have to be a "Cover up".

Maybe the reporter just didn't have that info.

Maybe there wasn't room for any more info in the space allotted for the story, etc.

PHOENIX -- Arizona Department of Public Safety officers discovered nearly 100 suspected illegal immigrants hidden inside a refrigerated tractor-trailer Wednesday evening, authorities said.

DPS stopped the tractor-trailer on Interstate 19 after receiving a tip from the U.S. Border Patrol, according to a news release from DPS.

The DPS officer took the driver into custody on a misdemeanor, then discovered 97 suspected illegal immigrants -- including children ages 9 to 12 -- in the 34-degree trailer, DPS said.

The tractor-trailer was also carrying fruit, DPS said.

"These people were treated like cargo," said Matthew Allen, special agent in charge of the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Office of Investigations in Arizona. "They were crammed inside this truck and subjected to near-freezing temperatures."

The immigrants, who were from Mexico and Guatemala, were taken to the Nogales Border Patrol station to be interviewed by ICE and Border Patrol agents, DPS said. The immigrants will be deported.

ICE has also opened a criminal investigation into the matter, DPS said.

Allen said nobody in the tractor-trailer was injured.
