(RNN) – A man with an axe wounded more than 20 people on a train in the German state of Bavaria on Monday. The suspect was shot and killed as he tried to flee the scene, CNN has reported.

He has been identified as as a 17-year-old Afghan man living in Ochsenfurt, Bavaria, according to Bavarian officials.

Ambulances scrambled to the scene of the attack which took place near the city of Wuerzburg. At least three people are seriously injured, the BBC said, adding that the man also had a knife.

There is no word yet on a motive for the crime. Search teams used helicopters to find the man.
