Trial Begins For Man Accused Of Murdering His Two Neighbors

    POSTED: 12:20 pm EST February 20, 2006

SANFORD, Fla. -- The trial started Monday morning for an Altamonte Springs man charged with murdering his neighbors almost two years ago. Prosecutors said Clemente Aguirre stabbed a 68-year-old mother and her daughter to death inside their home.

The courtroom is going through the painstaking process of selecting the jury, a process that's expected to last through the end of the day Tuesday.

Aguirre, an illegal immigrant from Honduras, listened to a translation of the proceedings as the judge began the voir dire component of jury selection. By early Monday afternoon, a number of jurors were excused for personal reasons in a trial that's supposed to last about two weeks.

Aguirre is accused in the stabbing deaths of his neighbors, 68-year-old Carol Bares and her daughter, 47-year-old Cheryl Williams, who lived together at a house on Vagabond Way in Altamonte Springs.

At first, detectives said Aguirre, then 24, admitted to evidence tampering, but they eventually charged the man with two counts of first-degree murder and one of burglary.

Investigators said bloody shoe prints at the murder scene matched his shoes and found blood-stained clothes and a knife inside his home next door.

Opening arguments are set for Wednesday.

After Killer's Outburst, Jury Recommends Death Penalty

    POSTED: 12:45 pm EST March 10, 2006
    UPDATED: 5:19 pm EST March 10, 2006

SANFORD, Fla. -- A Seminole County man convicted of killing his two neighbors had a dramatic outburst during his sentencing hearing on Friday morning.

Several hours later, the jury voted to sentence him to death, WESH 2 News reported.

On Friday morning, a mental health expert was in the process of testifying that Clemente Aguirre, 25, was capable of violent outbursts and even acting on those, which apparently aggravated the defendant. He leapt to his feet and began yelling at the witness.

"I didn't do it," he said, as at least two officers tried to restrain him.

He yelled that they were trying to kill him and that his only crime is being an illegal immigrant in this country. Aguirre is from Honduras.

Then as they escorted him out of the courtroom, he pointed at the witness and said, "You're a liar. A liar."

After he was taken from the courtroom, the judge met with all the attorneys to determine what they would do next.

Aguirre was convicted last week of stabbing his neighbor and her disabled mother to death in June 2004. Prosecutors said he stabbed his neighbor 129 times.

The outburst happened in front of the jury, who had to decide whether to recommend to the judge if Aguirre should be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole or if he should die. The judge will make the final decision on May 2.

The jury voted 7-5 in favor of the death penalty for Cheryl Williams' death and 9-3 in favor of it for her wheelchair-bound mother Carol Bareis's death.

Aguirre's defense attorneys have said that his past includes physical abuse as he was growing up and then drug and alcohol use, which started as a teenager.

How does Florida execute? Life in front of a firing squad comes to mind for this piece of scum.
