E-Verify Order Awaits Vote in Texas House

The Texas House is close to giving final approval to a bill requiring state agencies and public universities to use E-Verify to check the legal status of new hires.

Unlike Rick Perry's executive order, the bill applies only to state agencies, not contractors, and only new hires instead of all employees.
“Rick Perry's original order was correct that all existing employees should be run through the E-Verify system,” says William Gheen with the Americans for Legal Immigration PAC. “Anyone found to be not lawfully present in the United States should be removed from that job to make way for an American citizen or a legal immigrant.”

Gheen says if the E-Verify bill had any teeth, we'd see a reduction in those crossing the border.

“If they made it very clear that they were going to apply E-Verify many illegal immigrants would leave their jobs and positions, and many would return home as is,” he says.

Gheen and others believe the bill simply doesn't go far enough.

“Until companies stop hiring illegal immigrants, until we put a stop to Republicans and Democrats who cater to illegal immigrants with those who hire and support them, more Americans will be killed, will lose their job and will lose control their government to illegal immigrants.”

Governor Greg Abbott so far supports the current measure.
