In Florida, an Initiative Intended to End Bias Is Killed

MIAMI — An obscure ballot initiative in Florida intended to end a legacy of bias against Asian-Americans was defeated Tuesday, apparently because voters incorrectly assumed it would prevent illegal immigrants from owning property.

Had it passed, the initiative, known as Amendment No. 1, would have removed from the state’s Constitution language adopted in 1926 allowing the Legislature to prohibit foreigners who were barred from citizenship — Asian-Americans at the time — from owning land.

No such legislation was ever enacted here, and every other state that had such laws has scrapped them on grounds of equal protection. But on Tuesday, Florida’s effort to delete the provision went down, with 52 percent voting “noâ€

I'm glad we upset the New York Times. The people pushing that ballot initiative thought they were going to sneak one by on us and the public.

The reporter for this article has no idea we pumped our opposition to that into Florida with so many emails too.

    Quote,
The language before voters did not explain that the laws first appeared around 1913 during a public panic that Asian immigrants, mostly from Japan, would work on farms for less than Americans and buy up vast tracts of land. It failed to spell out that state provisions were intended to work hand-in-glove with discriminatory federal laws that prevented Asian-Americans from becoming naturalized citizens until 1952.
Someone help me out here. "during a public panic that Asian immigrants,"

Where these Asians the equivalent of what we know today to be migrant farm workers? They were not naturalized citizens?

    Secondly,

"prevented Asian-Americans from becoming naturalized citizens until 1952."

Is the term "Asian-Americans in this sentence misleading?

    Thirdly,

It seems that the tactic used to try and pass this Amendment was to use a small group of people, Asians, and more precisely, Asian-Americans as the focus group, as opposed to the true intent of aiding illegal immigrants.

    Am I way off base?

Advocates for amnesty will be coming out in force now, and we are going to have to be twice as vigilant.

What kind of crud reporting is this? The "bias against Asian-(Americans?)" was ended in 1952 when they were allowed to naturalize. The bias ended over 50 years ago. So why were they even trying to get rid of the law, so that illegals could soak Americans even more?

In fact the law does not even mention Asians, so why do they even bring that up?

Why would we want illegal aliens to own land here? Maybe it's just me, but I think owning land here might just ever so slightly encourage them to stay here illegally. DUH!!!

The NY Times SUCKS!! But it is cool that they're giving ALIPAC free publicity!!
