POSTED: 8:43 am MST June 8, 2010
PHOENIX -- The U.S. Attorney's Office said charges have been filed against three Mexican nationals accused of holding three teenagers and 16 others hostage at a Phoenix drop house.
Federal agents rescued the victims May 11.
A federal grand jury on May 20 returned a three count indictment against the defendants for violations of conspiracy to commit hostage taking, hostage taking, and harboring illegal aliens for profit.
Prosecutors said all defendants have been arraigned and pleaded not guilty before a U.S. Magistrate Judge.
The juvenile victims are from El Salvador and range in age from 10 to 16.
Authorities said the smugglers threatened the victims, menaced and physically intimidated them, used force, and kept them in a locked house until the smuggling fee was paid.
