Career criminal illegal immigrant gets 8 years in prison

CAREER CRIMINAL ALIEN SENTENCED TO OVER 8 YEARS IN PRISON FOR BORDER CRIMES



TUCSON, Ariz. – Pedro Puentes-Meza, 32, of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, was sentenced here by U.S. District Judge David C. Bury to 105 months incarceration. Puentes-Meza pleaded guilty in November 2009 to charges of illegal re-entry after deportation and in January 2010 to a violation of supervised release. He was sentenced to 84 months incarceration on the illegal re-entry charge and a consecutive 21 months incarceration on the supervised release violation.

Puentes-Meza was apprehended by United States Border Patrol agents on February 16, 2008, in Bisbee, Ariz. A records check revealed that he had an extensive criminal history, including 12 arrests when he was a juvenile and nine adult convictions. Seven of his arrests and convictions involved violent conduct, and 13 of his arrests and convictions were victim related crimes. He also had three prior convictions for illegal re-entry after deportation, each one resulting in a subsequent violation of his supervised release term, and he was deported from the United States on five occasions.

The investigation in this case was conducted by the Tucson Sector United States Border Patrol. The prosecution was handled by Claire Lefkowitz, Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of Arizona, Tucson.
