AZ Growers Moving to Mexico

Arizona's agriculture production is moving across the border to Mexico as the debate over illegal immigration continues, a Valley research economist says.
"Basically, the idea is if you can't bring the workers from Mexico to pick your crops here in the U.S., you take your crop to Mexico where the workers are," said Dawn McLaren with Arizona State University's W.P. Carey School of Business. "The land is there, too. It's not as though the land is that different on one side of the border as it is on the other."

As just one example, McLaren said the United States imported about 35 percent of its limes from Mexico 20 years ago. Today, it's 100 percent. And the U.S. imports 50 percent of its avocadoes from Mexico.

The shift to growing in Mexico could be an unintended consequence of Arizona's tough new employer sanctions law, which takes effect in January, McLaren said.

The Yuma area produces about 90 percent of the nation's winter vegetable crop. Growers have said they need 30,000 foreign workers to harvest the crops, beginning next month.

Quite frankly, I don't believe for a minute that this has much do with immigration...legal or illegal.

What the article fails to mention is that farmers out here have been selling out to developers for years now, been bought off or forced out for more freeways and sports arenas.

Farmland has been disappearing in this state by leaps and bounds well before the illegal alien population exploded like it did and became a problem.

Why don't these people start telling the truth for a change?

That's fantastic! What a way to open new jobs in Mexican. I'm sure the Mexican government & people will be very happy about this.

Stupid. The land is not there. an american cannot own land in Mexico. The producers just want larger profits so instead of carrying about America they are willing to make excuses for shifting to Mexico. DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM MEXICO.

Cool now farmers that are pro American can start farming using machines and Americans....on American Soil


Grow your own or buy local...or trade

Whenever I see anything coming out of Mexico, I refuse to buy it. Mexico is like China. Pesticide it, defacte on it, whatever you chose. They don't have the same standards as we do.

A group of farmers from California started farming in Mexico a year or two ago. At least it keeps the illegals where they belong, Mexico.

Wonderful, I think it is a great idea, everything I see here in my store is not from this country anyway.

So i hope you are moving there also with your family!! Take a few of the illegals with you please!!!

WELL, I WON'T BE BUYING LIMES OR AVOCADOES ANYMORE. AND I WILL BE SURE TO CHECK THE LABELS ON ALL MY PRODUCE FOR NOW ON. I WILL NOT EAT FOREIGN FOOD!

Unfortunately, this is going to be a trend that is only going to grow!
Now that the Mexican trucks can come past the 75 mile radius into the U.S. they will now be able to haul produce into this country at horrendously slashed rates.!

Currently rates to haul produce from Yuma across the country usually net's anywhere from $2.00 to $2.50 a mile! So if you are an independant and haul a 2000 mile run typically this load would pay you $4000.00. Well now these Mexican carriers will haul for a around 70cpm..so there you have it, all comes down to greed! Like I said this is only going to get worse...this will be the excuse used by many greedy corporations to take their business to Mexico and have it hauled in cheaply by Mexican trucks..again SADLY the one that pays will be the American who loses his/her job to globalization!
