N.M. Border Patrol checkpoint on I-25 closed for renovations

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Travelers on I-25 may have noticed something different in the past few days.

Most drivers in the area are used to a Border Patrol checkpoint just north of Las Cruces, but that checkpoint isn't in operation right now. Instead, the Border Patrol is stopping motorists north of Truth or Consequences.

Officials say this is only temporary since renovations are being done at the Las Cruces checkpoint, but travelers should give themselves extra time since there is only one lane.




The Border Patrol says the checkpoints are not the only line of defense. They also have regular patrols, sensors and other measures in place to keep contraband from moving up north.

The agency expects to have the Las Cruces checkpoint running again within the next day or so.
