Shelters in Mexicali at full capacity

MEXICALI.- Since the beginning of the week, various Central American migrant workers who were part of the caravan that entered Mexico to reach the North border and apply for humanitarian asylum in the United States began to arrive in Baja California, however, none of them want to stay in Mexicali, everyone want to go straight to Tijuana.


This situation changed on Thursday Nov. 15, with the arrival of the first two buses with 91 mostly Honduran migrants, at dawn and during the morning more buses arrived in total it is estimated that until 4 o’clock in the afternoon of Saturday Nov. 17, nearly 800 migrants arrived to Mexicali.


All of them were received in the 6 shelters for migrants in the city, Carlos Guillen Armenta, undersecretary of Social Development in the State, said on Friday that for the next few days the arrival of more members of the caravan is expected, that is why they are moving forward to adapt some public spaces as temporary shelters, during the week the mayor of Mexicali did not rule out the possibility of installing the shelter on the grounds of the FEX Exhibition and Exhibition Center, located in the area of ​​Río Nuevo.


The state official also said that the 1,300 spaces that have the 6 shelters of the city are already occupied, which makes a temporary shelter even more urgent.


He also called on the members of the caravan to respect the law, to behave, adapt to the rules of urbanity, and do not become delinquents for the community, there are job opportunities for those who want to work.
