A new facility that can hold up to 500 people is being opened near Tornillo, Texas, as U.S. Customs and Border Protection seek ways to deal with a recent surge in illegal border crossings.

The Tornillo-Guadalupe Temporary Holding Facility, about 40 miles east of El Paso, will remain open for 30 days, depending on the volume of people arriving at ports or crossing the border from Mexico in the El Paso area.

The temporary facility will offer overflow processing support to Customs and Border Patrol's ports of entry and Border Patrol stations in the El Paso area.

Customs and Border Patrol will process the Unaccompanied Alien Children and Family Units and once processing is complete, the agency will transfer them over to ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations.

Because of restrictions on removal operations, some people may be required to stay in the Border Patrol processing area for up to 72 hours.

"Our message to people thinking about crossing our borders illegally remains: Don't risk your lives," said El Paso Sector Chief Jeffrey Self. "Smugglers are not your friends. Don't put your lives in their hands."
