A convicted sex offender was arrested under suspicion of smuggling three undocumented men into the U.S. during a Border Patrol inspection at the Highway 86 checkpoint Monday.

A 44-year-old man driving a gray Ford sedan with three male passengers was referred to secondary inspection by El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents at approximately 6 p.m., during which it was determined that the three passengers were Mexican citizens illegally present in the U.S.

After conducting a criminal background check, Border Patrol agents determined that the driver, Joseph Anthony Dominguez was a registered sex offender with an extensive criminal history including convictions for negligent homicide, burglary and oral copulation with a person under 18 years of age.

Dominguez was arrested and transported to the Imperial County Jail, while the undocumented men were transported to the Border Patrol station for processing.
