Group appeals ruling upholding voter ID law

A civil rights group is appealing a judge's ruling upholding Arizona's requirement that people prove citizenship when they register to vote and show identification to cast ballots at polling places.

The appeal by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund comes after last month's ruling by U.S. District Roslyn Silver.

The judge had ruled the law, approved by voters in 2004 as part of a law that denied some government benefits to illegal immigrants, ensures the accuracy of voting rolls and doesn't pose an excessive burden on voters.

The groups challenging the law contend the rules put unfair barriers between citizens and the constitutional right to vote.
