BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Women leaders converged at Congressman Kevin McCarthy's office Wednesday, protesting for his support of a bipartisan immigration reform bill.

Organizers said 100 women participated in the protest, kicking off a national women-led movement in support of H.R. 15, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act.

The women camped at McCarthy's office for nearly 12 hours and were eventually locked inside the Congressman's office with Bakersfield police monitoring the door.

At around 11 p.m. the Congressman decided to meet with the women to speak on the issue.

In a statement released by the United Farm Workers, leader Lupe Larios said that the women did not get the answers they were looking for from the congressman.

"We appreciate Congressman McCarthy taking time to come meet with us, but he said that with only 13 days remaining in the 2013 congressional session, it is not realistic to address immigration reform. As one of his constituents and voter, we don't want to hear more excuses as to why it can't be done this year," Larios said.

The bill, introduced by Congressman Joe Garcia (D-FL), is similar to the Senate immigration bill which was passed last June and contains a path to citizenship for immigrants who are in the country illegally.

Protestors still hope McCarthy will join three other congressmen, Jeff Denham, R-Calif.; Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla.; and David Valadao, R-Calif., in support of the bill.

Women at the rally included immigrant women who said they suffer under the current immigration system and came from all over the state.

Bakersfield protesters confront House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy over Immigration Reform

House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was targeted by immigration reform protesters at his Bakersfield office.

A sit-in at the Bakersfield office of House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy Wednesday became the latest in a series of escalating protests as immigrant activists push for n reform legislation this year.

While others rallied outside, a group of women from advocacy groups around California asked to meet with the Republican congressman, refusing to leave until he signed a pledge to push an immigration overhaul in the House. Police were called in, but the thirteen protesters – calling themselves the “Baker’s (field) Dozen" - stayed after closing time, late into the night.

Among them were four advocates from the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, or CHIRLA, including director Angelica Salas, who said in a written statement on Thursday that it was, "absolutely unacceptable that the House, led by men such as Speaker Boehner and GOP Whip McCarthy, refuses for purely political reasons to move one inch on an issue most Americans and a large portion of Republicans agree upon.”

Organizers said that around 11 p.m. Wednesday, McCarthy finally came to the office to meet with them. But he did not sign the pledge.

Mike Long, a spokesman for McCarthy, said in an emailed statement that the congressman “remains undeterred toward reforming our broken immigration system.” But he condemned the protest tactics, saying McCarthy would listen to his constituents, not protests.

“It is unfortunate that these groups have resorted to these type of tactics, during, and long after, business hours,” Long wrote.

Some immigration reform protests have grown bolder in recent months, ranging from self-deportation protests at the U.S.-Mexico border to activists in Arizona and California recently blocking busloads of immigrant detainees.

Women leaders of what? This article is structured to sound like ALL women's groups in CA are supporting amnesty when in fact it is a group of amnesty supporters that happen to be women that are trying to use their sex as a political tool. JMO
