Criminal immigrants arrested, jailed rises, cost estimated at more than $1 billion
By The Associated Press – 21 hours ago
WASHINGTON — U.S. government auditors say about 55,000 immigrants were in federal prison last year.
The Government Accountability Office says that was about a 7 per cent increase from 51,000 in 2005.
Federal officials reimbursed local and state governments for jailing about 296,000 immigrants on civil violations and for crimes in 2009, compared to 220,000 in 2003.
The GAO estimates the federal government has spent about $1.5 billion to $1.6 billion from 2005 to 2009 to incarcerate immigrants in federal and local facilities.
The GAO says the number of immigrants arrested and deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement had risen 70 per cent since 2009.
Immigration, drugs and traffic violations account for half of the arrest offences.

The crime is sooo bad in Los Angeles with all the Mexican and El Salvadoran gangs. Everywhere you see graffiti; on traffic signs, walls, freeways, etc. because they are marking their territory. LA belongs to them, and they do not respect American laws, people, or property. Prison is a badge of honor for them, and they get free healthcare, too! I would rather have them go back to their own countries (and our gov't can help them there) rather than ruining our country!

Yeah but the Shyster has a "solution" to this problem. He wants to empty the prisons. What's he going to do with all the money he saves? Forget paying down the $28 billion deficit. He plans to give it to the Prision Guard Union.

Five charged in four Hollywood robberies
7:18 p.m. EDT, April 26, 2011

HOLLYWOOD— A stolen Rolex watch traced to a pawn shop led to the arrests of three adults and two teenagers who were charged in connection to four strong-arm robbery incidents this year near Hollywood's oceanfront Broadwalk, police announced Tuesday.
The five males all face at least one felony charge and all live on the east side of the city. Police say the group targeted pedestrians -- some tourists and some elderly -- in the evening or early morning hours along one of the city's most valuable and prominent destinations.
Some of the arrestees may be members or associate members of a national gang called Folk Nation, according to police documents.
The violent incidents that police say happened near or on the Broadwalk that they are linking to the arrestees include:
March 5 at 1:44 a.m., Donald Hendrickson, 72, of Hollywood, had $300 in cash, credit cards, and his driver's license stolen after leaving a Broadwalk restaurant. Police say four males pushed him to the ground and punched and kicked him.
March 9 at 11 p.m., vacationer Ihar Miatselitsa, 26, was punched by three men while he walked on the 1200 block of Hollywood Boulevard, police said. His $50 cell phone and $20 in groceries were taken.
March 10 just after midnight, Heather Cubel, 40, of Dania Beach and Patrick Bergeron, 49, of Hollywood, were robbed of $16,000 in valuables, including a $13,000 Rolex watch; an Olympus camera, an I-Pod and cash while walking on the Broadwalk, police said. Bergeron was struck in the face and Cubel's purse was snatched.
April 10 at 6 a.m., vacationer Paul Spates, 76, was severely beaten during his daily stroll on the Broadwalk when his $19 Timex watch was stolen. A camera at a Mexican restaurant captured the assault that left so much blood on the pavement, it had to be hosed down by firefighters. Spates will need reconstructive surgery after police say two men punched and kicked him.
The break for detectives came after the jewelry stolen in the March 10 incident was traced to a pawn shop, Hollywood Police Chief Chad Wagner said.
"One suspect who pawned the jewelry led us to another suspect who led us to another suspect," Wagner said.
Those arrested were:
Jason Alexander Noval, 19, charged with two counts of fraud, accused of providing false ownership information for pawn items, two counts of dealing in stolen property and one count of being an accessory after the fact.
Police say they have linked Noval to the Cubel and Bergeron incident. An affidavit says that a search of the stolen Rolex's model number through the Pawn Track system located it at Family Pawn at 2761 N. State Road 7 in Hollywood. Police said that pawn tickets had Noval's thumb print and that he was paid $1,500 for the Rolex, $1,100 for a gold necklace and $1,400 for a bracelet. An affidavit says Noval pawned the items on behalf of Alejandro Perez and Alex Balais and gave them each $1,250. The recovered items were returned to Bergeron, officials said.
Zackary A. Gonzalez, 18, was charged with three counts of robbery without a firearm or weapon and one count of aggravated battery.
Alejandro Perez, 19, was charged with two counts of robbery without a firearm or weapon, one count of aggravated battery and loitering.
Alex Balais, 17, was charged with two counts of robbery without a firearm or weapon and one count of aggravated battery.
John R. Wakula, 17, was charged with three counts of robbery without a firearm or weapon.
The facial cuts have mostly healed for robbery victim Donald Hendrickson, who said he was glad that arrests were made.
"It was only a matter of time," Hendrickson said. "It's so sad that it happened to other people after I was attacked. It's good that they didn't kill anybody."
He said the crime did not keep him from going back to the Broadwalk.
"If you give in to them, it's not a good situation," Hendrickson said. "And they increased the presence of the police on the beach. It's a beautiful beach. I've been coming here 30 years. I love the place."

California has been under federal court order to cut the number of inmates in the state prisons but CA. has been fighting this in court because no one wants these criminals to walk free without serving their time. Three federal judges have ruled that the prison population must be cut. Time is running out and some of the criminals must be released. But rather than set them free CA. is moving some back to county jails, because they aren't part of the court order, and some prisoners are being sent to out of state prisons to serve their time. Illegal alien prisoners are turned over to I.C.E. for deportation at the end of their sentences.
