Bishop Tobin, Catholic Pastors Urge ICE to Cease Raids, Allow Agents to Exercise ‘Conscientious Objection’

Letter Follows Meeting with Catholic Pastors Who Serve State’s Immigrant Community



(PROVIDENCE, R.I.) - The Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of Providence and 15 pastors who serve the state’s diverse immigrant community have urged Stephen Farquharson, Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE), Boston Regional Office, to declare a moratorium on immigration raids in Rhode Island. The clergy also encouraged ICE to allow agents to excuse themselves from participating in raids if such actions are not in conformity with their faith and conscience.

The bishop and pastors met at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Providence on Tuesday afternoon to: assess the current situation with the immigrants in various communities throughout the diocese; determine their needs; and discuss possible diocesan assistance.

'Conscientous Objector" status? Funny, when did they realize there truly is a war going on at the border?

Why don't they just renounce their US citizenship? It seems like that would be the fitting and proper thing to do.

The Bishop and pastors also urged ICE officials to question the morality of their participation in immigration raids. They believe that agents should not be forced to participate in such raids if agents conclude that such actions are immoral or contrary to their personal or religious beliefs

This bishop is a nut-case. It is stuff like this -- not just from the Catholic Church, but from all churches -- which have caused me to stop going to Church and have no affiliation with any church. Churches and Religions have gotten way too political to suit me.
