(CNSNews.com) - Democratic lawmakers are calling on President Bush to denounce Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson's call for the U.S. to assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

"At a time when the invasion of Iraq has caused such damage to the international reputation of the United States, the last thing we need is a prominent Republican advocating assassination as a foreign policy tool," said House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi in a statement.

"President Bush must respond to the Robertson statement forcefully to make clear that his Administration not only understands the reasons why our law prohibits assassination, but is committed to following the law," Pelosi added.

    CNN :

    ........................

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, called Chavez a "terrific danger" to the United States on his TV show "The 700 Club" and said it would be easier to kill Chavez than invade Venezuela.

"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."

    Chavez ally: Robertson a 'fascist'

    UTNE online :

Pat Robertson, the televangelist who famously blamed gays and abortions for the September 11 terrorist attacks, is suffering another bout with foot-in-mouth disease. On Monday, the founder of the Christian Coalition encouraged the Bush administration to assassinate President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, calling the leader a "terrific danger" to the United States, who would turn his country into "a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism all over the continent." "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war," he said on his show The 700 Club. "We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, ya know, strong-arm dictator."

Robertson: I Didn't Say 'Kill' Chavez

Robertson: I Didn't Say 'Kill' Chavez
    Wednesday, August 24, 2005

    Chavez Blasts U.S. Alongside Castro
Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson (search) on Wednesday said that his comments regarding Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (search) were "misinterpreted."

"I didn't say 'assassination,'" clarified Robertson during a broadcast of his "The 700 Club" Wednesday morning. "I said our special forces should go 'take him out,' and 'take him out' could be a number of things, including kidnapping."

He blamed The Associated Press for making him seem to advocate the assassination of a foreign leader.

"There are a number of ways to take out a dictator from power besides killing him," Robertson said. "I was misinterpreted by the AP, but that happens all the time."

However, during the original "700 Club" broadcast Monday night, Robertson clearly mentioned assassination.

"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we are trying to assassinate him, we should go ahead and do it," Robertson said Monday. "It's a whole lot easier than starting a war, and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."

Unless American agents acted decisively, the evangelist argued Monday, Venezuela would become "a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."

"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

The comments, picked up by the AP, quickly became Tuesday's major news story and drew reactions from liberal groups, the government of Venezuela, the Rev. Jesse Jackson (search) and even the State Department and Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld (search).

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack on Tuesday called Robertson's remarks "inappropriate."

"This is not the policy of the United States government. We do not share his views," McCormack said.

Rumsfeld said he knew of no consideration ever being given to the idea of assassinating Chavez.

"Our department doesn't do that kind of thing. It's against the law," he said.

Political assassination was made off-limits by former President Ford in an executive order in the mid-1970s.

Jackson issued a statement denouncing Robertson's remarks as "morally reprehensible and dangerously suggestive."

In Caracas, Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel said Venezuela was considering legal action against Robertson.

"There is a legal measure in the United States that condemns and punishes statements of this nature," Rangel said, referring to laws dealing with television broadcasts.

"The 700 Club" is syndicated to local television stations across the United States, which makes it subject to Federal Communications Commission rules. It is also carried by the cable ABC Family Channel and satellite television, neither of which fall under FCC jurisdiction.

Venezuela is the world's fifth-largest oil exporter, the only member of OPEC in the Western Hemisphere and the supplier of an estimated 8 percent of the petroleum the United States consumes.

Chavez, elected president of Venezuela in 1998, has irritated U.S. officials with his fiery rhetoric against American "imperialism" and his increasingly close ties to U.S. enemies such as Cuba and Iran. He says he is leading Venezuela toward socialism.

In 1999, his first year in office, Chavez reorganized the judiciary, bypassed the established Congress and wrote a new constitution that made sweeping changes to the national government, including increasing the presidential term to six years. The constitution was ratified by popular referendum later that year.

In 2000, elections solidified his control over the new national legislature and he was re-elected president. Later that year, he passed a law enabling him to rule by decree for a period of one year, which allowed him to basically write his own laws.

Venezuela's middle and upper classes, as well as its business community and large labor unions, largely oppose Chavez and have accused him of trying to create a Cuban-style Communist dictatorship. But he enjoys overwhelming support among the country's poor.

Chavez has accused Washington of backing a short-lived 2002 coup against him, a charge U.S. officials have denied.

In 2004, a popular referendum over whether to recall Chavez â€â€

    JP :

    you said :

Neighboring Colombia has accused Venezuela of giving shelter to left-wing Colombian guerrilla groups, and there have been allegations of Venezuelan influence in unrest in Bolivia earlier this year.

There are many videos that show the FARC guerrilla leaders in Chavez Demonstrations and Chavez Organized Events inside Venezuela. Like "Solidarity of the Opressed peoples and things like that.

And Chavez has said that he is "Perfectly Neutral" in the conflict between Colombia and the Guerrillas.

Even a fool realizes that Chavez wants to destabilize Governments that are friendly or Allies of the USA.

Look at Chavez in an open car with Castro receiving cheers from demonstrators.

He has also addresses friendly and "brotherly" letters to Terrorist Carlos ( in France ) that has killed lots of innocent civilians.

Oh yeah, he totally said it. I was watching it when he said it and he used those exact words. I watch it every once in awhile to see if something entertaining ever comes out of his mouth and sure enough I wasn't disappointed.

Yet another reason why I don't claim any particular religion.

I understand how you feel. He doesn’t make anyone who claims to be a Christian look good. Love thine enemies.....

Chavez threatens to lodge a complaint against US at UN

    AFP , CARACAS
    Tuesday, Aug 30, 2005,Page 7
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has warned he will lodge a complaint against the US at the UN and other international bodies if the US government fails to act against television evangelist Pat Robertson, who has called for Chavez's assassination.

"If the US government does not take action that it must take, we will go to the UN and Organization of American States to denounce the US government," the Venezuelan leader said Sunday as he addressed participants at talks on a social charter for the Americas.

He added he believed that by failing to act against Robertson, the US was "giving protection to a terrorist, who is demanding the assassination of a legitimate president."

Robertson caused a diplomatic stir last Monday when he said on the air that if Chavez believed the US was trying to kill him, "I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it."

Robertson apologized Wednesday, but then went on to compare Chavez to former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein and to suggest the US could one day be at war with his oil-rich country.

Chavez, a twice-elected leftist and close ally of Cuban President Fidel Castro, has often said Washington would like to assassinate him, and accuses the Bush administration of involvement in a coup d'etat that toppled him for 47 hours in April 2002. US officials last week distanced themselves from Robertson's comments.

The Venezuela president said he had already instructed his foreign minister and the country's ambassador to Washington to begin the process in the international bodies.

He said Venezuela could use international treaties and conventions to demand the extradition of the television preacher.

Chavez said he believed Robertson "should be sent to prison to serve as an example for the entire world."

Meanwhile, visiting US civil rights leader Jesse Jackson lent his support to Chavez, saying Robertson's remarks were "repugnant, immoral, illegal." Addressing the Venezuelan National Assembly, Jackson called for the US Justice Department to investigate the statement. Jackson, on a three-day visit to Venezuela to meet Chavez, politicians and community leaders, also called on US President George W. Bush to issue "a swift rejection" of Robertson's statement.

"It must be unequivocally clear that such a heinous act is not desirable nor designed nor planned. We must use power to reduce tensions, reduce the rhetoric of our threats," Jackson said.

The US State Department sought to distance itself from Robertson last week, calling his remarks "inappropriate" but said the evangelist spoke as a "private citizen."

Pat Robertson did a great disservice to his own country USA

Pat Robertson did a great disservice to his own country USA

Yes, because now all Newspapers throughout Latin America have given the news of "Call to Assasination" in first page. And the U. S. State Department has been very weak saying only that "the remarks are inappropriate" ( Also first page news in Latin America )

So the theory that Chavez may be assasinated has gained credibility throughout the Region and what was a Ridiculous Madness and Stupid Paranoia of Chavez has now become a serious matter and there was a diplomatic document signed by many Latin American Nations rejecting the calls to Murder.

The Clear Winner of this Round : Chavez

The Clear Loser of the Round : The U. S. Foreign Policy and its claims that it does not support Terrorism. Because killing a head of State is Super Terrorism at its Best. And the note of the State Department has made everybody laugh in Latin America.

    People here expect COURT ACTION.

I hate Chavez more than anybody else in ALIPAC..... He is a super idiot, populist and demagogue. He hates my country Colombia and the Colombians from his infancy. He is a danger to stability and peace.

But the U. S. serves him a lot of popularity on a silver tray. All Newspapers in Latin America are filled with comments of the double standard.

It is as the Old Good Times when men could have extramarital sex but women could not.

"Terrorism is only when U. S. intererests are harmed" .... that is what the local newspapers here say. And Colombia is the Most Conservative Country in Latin America in any respect and the Most Pro U. S. in any respect.

Pat Robertson did a "great disservice" to the US? Guess what, V? Nobody gives a damn what Pat Robertson has to say--nor does he speak for anybody but himself. Here in America you have the right to Free Speech, even if it makes you look like an idiot.

Pat Robertson did a great disservice to himself, nobody else.
