Concrete Barriers Added to Hidalgo Int'l Bridge

HIDALGO – Concrete barriers at the Hidalgo International Bridge have led to some lane closures.

Many people crossing say there are concrete barriers topped with what looks like concertina wire.

Luis Vargas says he crosses from Reynosa once or twice a week.

“On the way back, for the vehicle lines, there is only one lane open. It’s really complicated for drivers to cross over,” says Vargas.

Customs and Border Protection tell us the roadblocks are called jersey barriers.

Only one lane is open for the time being; all four inspection lanes are open.

Vargas tells us he only saw two immigrants waiting at the bridge and a full house inside the office.

On U.S. border, fence meant as barrier becomes lure for migrants

EL PASO, Texas (Reuters) - Huddled against a border fence on a bitterly cold morning in El Paso, Texas, a group of 60 Guatemalan migrants, around half toddlers and children, shouted for help: "We're cold, we're hungry, we need shelter."

The group was trying to surrender to U.S. Border Patrol agents and claim asylum, but the agents were too busy herding other groups along the fence that stands about 100 yards (91 m) inside U.S. territory.

    --------------------------------------------

After dark, Romero encounters another group of parents with kids along the busy Border Highway in El Paso near the Bridge of the Americas. They are waiting on U.S. soil, but on the other side of the border fence. Border fences or walls are not built right on the boundary between the U.S. and Mexico, because agents need access to operate, and crews often have to repair the barriers.
Romero escorts this group to a spot where they can exit to the other side of the fence and join another group already waiting with Border Patrol agents for transportation to the processing center.
