Cotton: Trump called me to say there is no deal on DACA

Cotton: Trump called me to say there is no deal on DACA

By Mallory Shelbourne - 09/17/17 10:56 AM EDT

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said in an interview Sunday that President Trump called him to let him know he did not make a deal with Democratic leadership on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“You know, I think the president has said publicly that there's not a deal,” Cotton told NBC’s “Meet the Press,” referencing Trump’s discussion with Democratic leadership about the DACA program and border security.

Some reports indicated Trump agreed to hold back on attaching funding for his proposed border wall in order to push through DACA legislation with Democratic support.

“He wants to see a deal," Cotton added. "In fact, he called me a couple nights ago to say there's no deal. He wants to make sure that we protect the interest of American workers. In particular, by ending unlimited chain migration which is why we have so many unskilled workers coming into the country.”

Cotton emphasized that a deal has yet to be reached on DACA, an Obama-era program that protected young immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children from deportation. The Trump administration announced earlier this month that it would phase out the program, giving Congress six months to act.

“We want to put American interests or American workers' interests first. And we'll do that. But there's no deal right now. And I'm happy to work for the president and Democrats in Congress try to reach a deal that helps American workers,” Cotton said.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), after meeting with Trump last week, said they agreed to work toward a deal in Congress to protect DACA and on a border security package.

The White House also has emphasized that a deal on DACA has yet to be reached.

DACA already had a "deal" unlawfully written by Obama

    That "deal" has been terminated

    No more new "deals"

Let their work permits expire and they go home and apply for another work permit on THEIR soil

They have been given the opportunity to stay and work OVER all the other applicants applying to come here LEGALLY

THAT IS NOT FAIR TO EVERYBODY ELSE ON THE PLANET

NO NEW WORK PERMITS AND NO EXTENSIONS SHOULD BE APPLIED FOR ON OUR SOIL

YES...WE WANT TO BOOT THEM ALL OUT AND THEIR ILLEGAL FAMILIES
ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

DO NOT REWARD THEM - DEPORT THEM ALL

Yes, that is what we want. That is exactly what we want because it's the law, it's just law and it's necessary law to protect American citizens, American workers, American taxpayers and the sovereignty of the United States.

Mistrust abounds. The President says one thing thing then someone in his administration says another or a democrat pops up with their narrative.

Tom Cotton is open to amnesty for the "dream" illegal aliens so not sure what to believe. They are using DACA numbers but the Dream Act covers many more. Any amnesty will never be confined to that small number or exclude others.

I do not see democrats caving but the president and too many republicans have voiced a willingness to give in on amnesty plans.

We'll just have to wait and see. It was a real surprise that Cotton supports a deal on DACA. Maybe he supports a deal on DACA if it gets his RAISE ACT passed. I just don't think Congress, no matter what "deal" is proposed will pass DACA amnesty, because it's political suicide for Republicans. But we need to work hard to ensure they don't.

Sen. Cotton: 'No Deal' on DACA Without Helping Americans

    Sunday, September 17, 2017 12:02 PM

    By: Eric Mack

There is "no deal" on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, despite the Democratic leadership's instance on one this week after meeting with President Donald Trump, according to Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark.

"I think the president has said publicly there's not a deal, but he wants to see a deal," Cotton told NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday. "In fact, he called me a couple of nights ago so say 'there is no deal.' He wants to make sure we protect the interest of American workers."

The president has asked Cotton to help work with Democrats on a DACA deal "that helps American workers," Cotton said, whereas Democrats' priorities lie with immigrants.
"They want to focus on a package of benefits for illegal immigrants," Cotton told Todd of Democrats, contrasting the GOP's focus in DACA deal-making. "We want to put American workers' interests first, and we'll do that.

"But there is no deal right now. I'm happy to work with the president and Democrats in Congress try to reach a deal that helps American workers."
Cotton acknowledged "Congress has shown three times that it can't pass a major comprehensive immigration bill."

"What you need is targeted and incremental deal that solves this problem of the 700,000 [DACA recipients] but also mitigates the negative side affects of it," Cotton told Todd.

". . . That's why we can't simply codify DACA. We also have to deal with the negative side effects."

(Senator Cotton, how about telling the real numbers. When you fudge on that what else are you possibly fudging on in deal talks?)

The fact Trump wants a deal with Democrats on DACA / Dream Act legislation is the root of the problem because in doing so Trump is violating most of his campaign promises on immigration issues to his voters.

Cotton: Dream Act Would Be Biggest Amnesty in History

    by PAM KEY17 Sep 2017

Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Sen. Tom Cotton (R- AR) said passing the DREAM Act, which includes a pathway to citizenship, would “be the single biggest amnesty in the history of the United States.”

Cotton said, “Well if you pass the so-called DREAM Act it will be the single biggest amnesty in the history of the United States. Even bigger than the 1986 amnesty which Ronald Reagan said was his biggest mistake in office. The core debate has never been legal status it’s been how are we going to control the side effects. Which is undercutting jobs and wages — which my legislation the RAISE Act would do — and deterring more illegal immigration.”

“Put yourself in the shoes of the parent in El Salvador,” he continued. “If you have the promise of American citizenship for your child trying to get away from the poverty and violence in that country and we pass a straight amnesty with no effort to increase enforcement or change Green Cards, would you take the very dangerous risk to get your child in America for the next amnesty? That’s why we can’t simply codify DACA. We also have to deal with the negative side effects.”
