Critics: Immigration bill a smokescreen for GOP on amnesty

Immigration enforcement groups hope the House rejects an immigration bill designed to "secure the border first," saying it basically gives cover to those Republicans who support President Obama's amnesty plan.
The Border Security First Act of 2015 (H.R. 399) was supposed to be voted on Wednesday, but the huge snowstorm hitting the Northeast forced House leaders to postpone that vote. The bill calls for $10 billion to fund new technologies and add Border Patrol agents, fencing, and surveillance strategies to the border.
Critics, however, say H.R. 399 will do nothing about the millions of people who are already in the country illegally. William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC), is among those critics.
"The truth of the matter is if we do not start deporting illegal immigrants in the interior, if we do not start enforcing our existing laws instead of changing our laws to accommodate those who broke them, there is nothing that will secure that border. It will never be secured," he predicts.
"... The bottom line is that this is all political theater designed to give maximum cover to the Republicans who are betraying everybody that they serve back in their districts."
The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) echoes those sentiments.
"Sadly, H.R. 399 is a bill designed to convince the American public that our illegal immigration crisis is being dealt with, so that the House leadership can move forward with its own plan to grant amnesty to illegal aliens and increase admission of guest workers favored by business interests," states FAIR president Dan Stein.
He adds that his organization can't support a bill "that falls so far short of true immigration enforcement and, at the same time, provides a pretext for amnesty and the admission of even more foreign workers to compete for American jobs."
The two groups are encouraging concerned citizens to contact their Republican members of Congress and urge them to vote against H.R. 399.
