Dallas County sheriff's jail guard arrested, is illegal

Dallas County sheriff's jail guard arrested for being in country illegally

A Dallas County sheriff’s jail guard was arrested at work this morning by federal immigration officers for being in the country illegally and faces deportation, county and federal officials said.

Maria Elvia Ross, 34, was taken into custody by officers with U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement sometime after 10 a.m., officials said.

Maria Ross Ross, who was hired in 2001, has served on Sheriff Lupe Valdez’s quality assurance team that oversees improvements to sanitation in the jails.

Ross' citizenship problem came to light when she underwent a background check after recently applying to be a sheriff's deputy, Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price said.

"I think it was a shock to all of us," he said.

Price said the department should have caught it when Ross was originally hired in 2001, when Jim Bowles was sheriff.

"The system we have for vetting people is a lot better," Price said.

Ross recently divorced Dallas County sheriff’s deputy, David Ross, whom she married in 2005.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kim Leach said the matter is under investigation and declined further comment.

Just doing the jobs Americans do not want to do! It took 9 years for this illegal invader to be caught stealing a job from an American citizen!

God only knows how many illegal invaders have stolen similiar jobs around this country!

What is about women named Elvira? It sounds like a bad joke... You might be an illegal alien, if your name is Elvira.

Ross recently divorced Dallas County sheriff’s deputy, David Ross, whom she married in 2005.
I see a second problem in the Sheriff's Department.

    Dallas better get busy re-vetting.

    Dallas County jailer facing deportation

    Dallas County jailer facing deportation

DALLAS - A Dallas County jailer is facing deportation after she was arrested by federal agents while on the job Friday morning.

Maria Elvia Ross, 31, is suspected of being in the country illegally, and appears to have worked for the county illegally for nearly a decade.

Commissioner John Wiley Price said the news has come as a shock to those at Dallas City Hall. He also said the mistake should have been caught when Ross was originally hired with the county in 2001, which was when Jim Bowles was sheriff.

"That's probably the $64,000 question," Price said. "It happened in a prior administration, you really don't know. I guess at some point in time, something always gets through the cracks."

Ross had extra responsibilities and was on Sheriff Lupe Valdez's quality assurance team, which oversees improvements to sanitation.

"Their job is to make sure that the jail meets all of the safety compliance standards," Price said.

Price said Ross was caught when she applied for a deputy position and had to undergo a second background check.

"Once you are vetted through the process, I'm sure periodically they check," he said. "But, to be able to check that many officers every day, I mean nobody does that."

The commissioner said the county follows strict federal guidelines when it comes to checking immigration status, but called the Ross incident a fluke.

A News 8 investigation uncovered more than 1,000 illegal immigrants were charged with serious crimes and then deported from Dallas County before their cases went to trial. Those inmates were locked up in the same jail system in which Ross was responsible for helping oversee quality control. After the reports, a loophole in the law was closed to ensure those charged face the justice system.

I would suspect she got caught when the HR department for the Sheriff Department did an E-verify check where the name and DOB did not match the false or stolen social security number she was being paid under.

That's the downside to E-verify...you can not legally check any current employees once you joined the program unless they apply for a new position such as she did. So anybody employed prior to them using e-verify would not have been checked.

You would think that she would have shared her illegal status with her former husband but maybe she never told him her secret. I am sure internal affairs will be questioning him on this.

You can't check to see if a current employee is an illegal after you sign up for E-verify. Typical government/ACLU BS. Illegal is illegal. I wonder if they are going to use that ration of crap if an illegal tries to fly a plane into the White House again. How far does this go? This is more of that liberal garbage like Whoopi Goldberg saying about Roman Polanski's raping the young girl. She said, "well, it's not 'rape' rape." Double-speak to get around enforcing the law.
