Congressman Calls for U.S. Training of Mexican Law Enforcement

A South Texas Congressman wants to bring Mexican law enforcement to the United States for training.

Tuesday's main focus was cooperation between the United States and Mexico. Folks we spoke to tell us working together is the only way our borders will be secure.

Leaders from both the United States and Mexico came together to voice their ideas and opinions on how to better secure our border. U.S. Congressmen Henry Cuellar says help from the U.S. side could better prepare our Mexican counterparts in the fight.

"That will call on training of local and state officials that can be done not only from this side but also have Mexican officials, law enforcement officials if they want to come to the U.S," says Cuellar.

Cuellar says he's suggesting Mexican officers receive specific forensic training by our government. He says it's up to our neighbors south of the border to accept the help.

"The United States can do a lot more to help Mexico, but a lot of it depends on them. How far depends on them," says Cuellar.

Matamoros Mayor Alfonso Sanchez Garza believes the help could be beneficial.

The training would require Mexican law enforcement to train for three months. Garza says the training could have an impact on the people of Mexico and how they view their law enforcement. Garza says it's something the Mexican law enforcement lost a long time ago.

Garza says if Mexican officials agree to the training, the cities most plagued by violence will get the help first

So the US military trains lawless morons that will flee to the Cartels the minute they are threatened or offered cash and 82 virgins, LOL

How much would this rediculous idea cost USA taxpayers ? I think Mexico has leeched enough from USA citizens already.

.We know who would have to pay for their training and most of the Police work for the cartels and would love some advanced training by the USA Gov.

We all know that this won't work these newly trained officers will end up useing what they've learned to help the cartels mexico's police are too easily courpted. If it were up to me I wonld not invest a dime in to training people who aren't trust worthy! Why can't mexico send its people somewhere else to get the training? I guess the USA is the only place mexico can get anything from no other country will help them!

Cuellar, smart people make mistakes but learn from them. Idiots keep making the same mistakes over and over and never learn. You sir are an IDIOT. The last time Congress came up with a idiotic idea like this we brought members of the Mexican military to train them to fight the cartels. The initial members of the LOS ZETAS received specialized military training in counter-insurgency and locating and apprehending drug cartel members in the United States at Fort Benning, Georgia in the early 1990s while still members of the Mexican military. Are we to stupid to remember this?
