Drug bust includes tons of produce for food bank

The Community Food Bank received 28,000 pounds of produce Friday after authorities busted a tractor-trailer rig that was also hauling marijuana, an official said.
The donation of eggplant, zucchini and squash was the result of an investigation that also yielded nearly 2,500 pounds of marijuana and the arrests of three men, said Sgt. Mark Morlock of the Counter Narcotics Alliance.
Early Friday, police received a report from the South Side about a suspicious tractor-trailer rig that was parked on a residential street with the engine running, Morlock said.
Officers responded to the area and checked out the truck, at which time they decided to contact the CNA, he said.
CNA detectives watched the rig throughout the day and saw suspicious activity that is consistent with drug trafficking, he said.
Around 2 p.m., the rig left the area and began heading eastbound on Valencia Road but was pulled over for a traffic violation near South Country Club Road, Morlock said.
When the rig came to a stop, the driver got out and ran away but was caught by an officer, he said. A drug-sniffing dog alerted to the presence of narcotics.
As they unloaded the vehicle, authorities found the marijuana concealed in false compartments, Morlock said.
Officials were unable to determine who owned the produce, so rather than throwing it out, the CNA gave it to the Community Food Bank.
"No one was claiming ownership, so we wanted to make sure it was put to good use rather than having it going to waste," Morlock said. "We donate to the food bank regularly."
Alejandro Mendoza Gonzalez, 45, was booked into the Pima County jail on a charge of transporting/selling marijuana. He is a Tucson resident.
Two others who were escorting the rig in two separate vehicles were also booked into jail on the same charge. They are Eduardo Lopez, 30, of Tucson and Antonio Figueroa Beltran, 59, of Rio Rico.
