Eagle Pass Border Patrol Agents Seize Assault Rifles
(Thursday, May 02, 2013)
Del Rio, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Eagle Pass South station discovered a cache of rifles hidden near the Rio Grande River late Thursday night.
Agents were following foot sign near the Rio Grande when two subjects emerged from the brush and jumped into the water, and swam to the Mexican side of the river. A search of the area turned up two military-style duffel bags. An extensive search of the area yielded no other subjects. The bags contained a total of 11 AK-47 assault rifles and one 7.62-mm hunting rifle.
The rifles were turned over to agents from Homeland Security Investigations.
The Del Rio Border Patrol sector is part of the South Texas Campaign, which leverages federal, state and local resources to combat transnational criminal organizations. During fiscal year 2012, Del Rio sector Border Patrol agents seized 83 firearms and 38,461 rounds of ammunition.
