The group of migrants, consisting mainly of women, children and members of the LGBT community, arrived in two vehicles from Mexico City.

    (CNN) -
A group of about 80 members of the migrant caravan arrived Sunday in the Mexican city of Tijuana, on the border with the United States, according to José María García Lara, from a shelter in the city called Juventud 2000.

The group of migrants, consisting mainly of women, children and members of the LGBT community, arrived in two vehicles from Mexico City, García Lara told CNN.

The main contingent of the migrant caravan continues its journey mainly on foot and arrived on Sunday in Irapuato, a city 320 kilometers north of Mexico City.

At this rate, the bulk of the migrant caravan could reach Tijuana in eight days, although CNN can not confirm the exact date.

TIJUANA, Mexico (KGTV) - The first group of people from the migrant caravan have arrived in Tijuana, according to a Mexican journalist.

According to journalist Jorge Nieto, the group has 85 people. This group is reportedly people of the LGBTQ+ community and they left the others behind because they felt they were being discriminated against.

They arrived at the Tijuana bus station, then took buses to an Airbnb in Playas de Tijuana, paid for by U.S. lawyers with the caravan.

Once at the house, neighbors clashed with the migrants, "Yelling at them go away go to a shelter, this is not your place, all you came here this is a safe area and we are afraid of you," Nieto said shelters aren't an option as they are already over capacity from the last caravan.

Nieto said the migrants defended themselves, saying the neighbors could hurt them as well, "we're not going to make noise, we're not going to make any mess."

One migrant spoke with reporters saying they had the right to seek refuge in another country and pursue a better life with respect.

It's not clear when they plan to turn themselves into U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and seek asylum in the United States.

The group will reportedly spend a few days in Tijuana to rest.

First Contingent of Migrant Caravan Arrives in Tijuana

The migrants appear to be on a path to Tijuana across the border from San Diego, which is still some 1,600 miles away

A contingent of nearly 80 people who went ahead of the migrant caravan arrived Sunday at the border city of Tijuana, across from San Diego.

This group consisted of about 76 people from the LGBT community who arrived ahead of the caravan in buses that were paid for by an anonymous organization. They said they were discriminated against by people in the caravan.

The group told NBC 7’s sister station, Telemundo 20, they plan to go to the port of entry in San Ysidro or Otay Mesa as soon as possible to ask for political asylum.

Most of them are confident they will be granted asylum.

Nehemías de León arrived in Tijuana with his boyfriend, Erick Dubón. He said they are very thankful to be here.

"Very happy, truthfully, grateful to God especially because he has given us the opportunity to be here," he said. "I have always been very appreciative of the people along the way."

De León said the people in the caravan are not bad people, they just want a better life.

"I think to do bad, you don't have to migrate to another country. You just stay where you are," he said. "But I think we're going for a better life. We want to work. We want to be what we've always been — honorable people."

Another of the migrants, César Mejía, told reporters that his goal had been to get to Tijuana first, so that, for once, the group's members wouldn't be discriminated against as they have been during the caravan.

"Even to bathe was a big problem, and when we wanted to shower there was no water ... same with food," he said.

Although they have not suffered physical violence during the caravan's travel, Mejía said they have been victims of verbal violence, as happened in their countries of origin.

These migrants were staying in Playas de Tijuana for the night and at least for one more day to rest before heading to the port of entry to request asylum.

The rest of the caravan was leaving the central Mexico city of Queretaro, where they spent Saturday night, heading to the city of Irapuato.

Local Mexican officials were once again on Sunday helping thousands of Central American migrants find rides on the next leg of their journey toward the U.S. border.

The migrants appear to be on a path to Tijuana across the border from San Diego, which is still some 1,600 miles away.

At a toll plaza to the west of the central Mexico city of Queretaro, police helped find trucks to take migrants and prevented them from trying to stop drivers themselves.

The government of Queretaro said via Twitter that 6,531 migrants had moved through the state between Friday and Saturday. It said that 5,771 of those were departing Sunday morning after staying in three shelters it had prepared, the largest of which was a soccer stadium in the state capital.

Those numbers appeared even higher than counts made by officials when the group was in Mexico City for several days, raising the possibility that other migrants have caught up to the main caravan.

The migrants began walking before dawn Sunday for Irapuato about 62 miles (100 kilometers) to the west after crossing into Guanajuato state, where local authorities also assisted them.

A day earlier a similar scene played out as the caravan exited Mexico City. Dedicated metro trains moved migrants across the capital before dawn and at a toll plaza north of the city they formed orderly lines to wait for their turn to climb aboard passing 18-wheelers that were willing to help them cover the 124 miles (200 kilometers) to Queretaro.

Emilson Manuel Figueroa managed a seat on the back of a flatbed truck packed with other migrants.

"I think that in my country I will get old and will never have something to live on," said the 23-year-old cab driver from Honduras.

The caravan became a campaign issue in U.S. midterm elections and U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of over 5,000 military troops to the border to fend off the migrants. Trump has also insinuated without proof that there are criminals or even terrorists in the group.

Many migrants say they are fleeing rampant poverty, gang violence and political instability primarily in the Central American countries of Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, and they have now been on the road for weeks.

Mexico has offered refuge, asylum or work visas to the migrants, and its government said 2,697 temporary visas had been issued to individuals and families to cover them while they wait for the 45-day application process for a more permanent status.

But most vowed to continue to the United States.

"(In the U.S.) we can earn more and give something to our family, but there (in Honduras) even when we want to give something to our children, we can't because the little we earn it's just for food, to pay the house and the light, nothing else," said Nubia Morazan, 28, of Honduras as she prepared to set out Sunday with her husband and two children.

Ami Horowitz journeys to Mexico to find out the real reason why there is a caravan of migrants on its way to the United States’ border with its southern neighbor.
