Friends fear Charlotte high school arts student detained by ICE could be deported

A Charlotte high school student set to graduate from Northwest School of the Arts in the spring has been detained by federal immigration authorities, and friends fear he could be deported.

Gustavo “Gus” Zamudio’s problems started when he was arrested last weekend, on Feb. 25, on a felony charge of larceny by employee, court records show. It was not immediately known where he worked, and additional details of the case were not available Saturday.

Zamudio had just turned 18 on Feb. 16.

The native of Mexico is being held in a federal immigration detention center in southern Georgia, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement records show.

“Gus is one of the sweetest, funniest and most precious humans I’ve ever met,” Northwest senior Devyn Bauer wrote on social media Saturday. “All I can think about is how terrified he must be feeling right now.”

ICE spokesman Bryan Cox said he was unable to immediately comment about Zamudio’s case. But he added, “ICE is focused on identifying, arresting and removing public safety threats, such as criminal aliens and gang members, as well as individuals who have violated our nation’s immigration laws.”

Word quickly spread among the Northwest community about Zamudio’s detention.

Northwest is a tight-knit magnet program for grades 6 through 12, and is the only magnet school in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools that offers a concentration in the arts. Reached Saturday night, Principal Melody Sears referred comment to the district. A district spokesperson could not be reached.

Zamudio’s case comes at a time when immigrants and their supporters in Charlotte and around the nation remain worried about President Donald Trump’s push to deport undocumented immigrants.

Under a federal program known as 287(g), Mecklenburg sheriff’s deputies, in partnership with ICE, check out everyone who is arrested and sent to the county jail to identify potential undocumented immigrants or those who have violated their immigration status.

During their jail processing, all prisoners are asked where they were born and what country are they a citizen or naturalized citizen of. Depending on the answer, they could face additional scrutiny by deputies trained to work in the 287(g) program to see if the person is unlawfully in the country.

In the last fiscal year, 1,241 foreign nationals went through the county program and 100 were deported, according to ICE.

Zamudio left the jail on Monday, records show. He is being held at the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Ga.

People detained at that center appear before an immigration judge who determines whether they will be released while the deportation process unfolds.

’A ton of friends’

Bauer described Zamudio as a close friend, and started a “Keep Gus Home” campaign on Go Fund Me on Saturday, hoping to raise $25,000.

“We’ve laughed together, we’ve cried together and we’ve always been there for each other,” Bauer wrote.

Zamudio lived in Charlotte most of his life and planned to attend college and become a lawyer, according to Bauer’s post.

“He has a ton of friends back here in Charlotte trying to do everything we can,” Bauer stated. “Gus — we love you, we miss you and we’re not giving up.”

He is just the 'funniest, sweetest, etc", who evidently stole from the people who gave him a job.

He is the 'funniest, sweetest, etc.", person who is here illegally, but has evidently benefited from a very special education. That paid for by American taxpayers and taking a place that might have been filled by an equally deserving American child. Actually, there may be more deserving - since he is considered a minority - he may have gotten moved up the line.

They're just the strangest people I've ever seen. Their principles and who and what they respect are just upside down. So, GET THEM OUT, GET THEM ALL OUT. We have enough of our own thieves to concern ourselves with, we don't need to add to that problem with illegal immigration.

The thefts at the Myers Park store occurred over a seven-week period, ending with Zamudio’s arrest, the report says. Details were scarce, though the report says Zamudio stole the money by “putting it in his pocket.”

Store manager Kevin English-Roussin said Monday he could not comment and directed questions to Harris Teeter’s corporate headquarters. Danna Robinson, the company’s communication manager, said Harris Teeter does not not discuss personnel matters.

Zamudio is scheduled to graduate in the spring from Northwest School of the Arts. His arrest, however, appears to have made the Mexico native eligible for a stepped-up effort by the Trump administration to deport undocumented aliens with criminal records.

Why did the grocery store hire an illegal alien in the first place?

What documents did he use to get the job?

If the grocery store knew he was illegally in the country and hired him, then they need to be prosecuted and fined.

Yes, what documents did he use? Could he be charged with using false documents? That's something they should always tack on to their 'resume'.

We know that a lot of people knowingly hire illegals. They do it with the blessing and protection of our very own government. This has been going on since the Clinton administration, exploding during the Bush administration and becoming totally obscene during the Obama administration.

He had a DACA waiver which would allow him to work.

A Charlotte high school student facing deportation was charged last month with embezzling almost $3,000 from a Harris Teeter store.

Gustavo “Gus” Zamudio was arrested Feb. 25 on felony larceny by employee, court records show. A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police report on the incident says Zamudio, 18, took $2,907 from the grocery store at 1015 Providence Road where he worked. Under North Carolina law, a theft becomes a felony when it involves property or services valued at more than $1,000.

The thefts at the Myers Park store occurred over a seven-week period, ending with Zamudio’s arrest, the report says. Details were scarce, though the report says Zamudio stole the money by “putting it in his pocket.”

Carnell Johnson, the teenager’s immigration attorney, says Zamudio disputes the embezzlement charges.

Zamudio is scheduled to graduate in the spring from Northwest School of the Arts. His arrest, however, appears to have made the Mexico native eligible for a stepped-up effort by the Trump administration to deport undocumented aliens with criminal records.

Under a federal program known as 287(g), Mecklenburg sheriff’s deputies, in partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, scan the jail population for potential undocumented immigrants or those who have violated their immigration status.

Johnson says he hopes to get a judge to agree to hold a bond hearing for Zamudio within the next two weeks in Georgia.

He said before his arrest, Zamudio had received protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, a renewable two-year program started by the Obama administration that protected certain immigrants from deportation who had come into the country with their parents. DACA participants are also eligible for work permits.

Danna Robinson, the company’s communication manager, said Harris Teeter does not discuss personnel matters. But she added that the company “confirms the identity and work authorization of every new hire,” and that the company is enrolled in the federal eVerify program.

Under the previous administration, participants would lose DACA protections when convicted of a felony. Johnson said the Trump administration is revoking DACA status at the time of arrest.
“Six months ago, Gus would already have been released and he could have been home,” Johnson said.

ICE spokesman Bryan Cox said last week that he was unable to immediately comment about Zamudio’s case. But he added, “ICE is focused on identifying, arresting and removing public safety threats, such as criminal aliens and gang members, as well as individuals who have violated our nation’s immigration laws.”

Zamudio left the Mecklenburg County Jail on Feb. 27. He is now being held in a federal immigration detention center in southern Georgia, ICE records show.

Sounds like he had a authorization to work through the Obama DACA program.
