NPR is reporting that she has died. I hope this is not true, it is horrible.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and six others died after a gunman opened fire at a public event on Saturday, the Pima County, Ariz., sheriff's office confirms.

The 40-year-old Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

At least three other people, including members of her staff, were injured. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known.

Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up and fired indiscriminately from about four feet away, Michaels said.

The suspect ran off and was tackled by a bystander. He was taken into custody. Witnesses described him as in his late teens or early 20s.

Giffords was first elected to represent Arizona's 8th District in 2006. The "Congress on Your Corner" events allow constituents to present their concerns directly to her.

Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. This is outrageous and so sad. My deepest sympathies to the families of the fallen and hope they get and prosecute the person (s) who committed such an atrocious act.

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, 40, was shot and killed Saturday morning at a community event she was hosting on Tucson's northwest side. Numerous others were shot as well and the are reports as many as six others are dead.

There are numerous reports that she was shot in the head at virtually point blank range. Three members of her staff were also shot.

Pima County Sheriff's Department says it happened at a Safeway grocery store at the intersection of Ina and Oracle. The event was a "Congress on Your Corner" which she has frequently held during her four years in office. She was sworn in to her third term last week.

As many as 15 others were shot as well by a single gunman who walked up to the Congresswoman and began shooting.

Giffords is a former Arizona state senator. She was elected to Congress in 2006.

What a horrible tragedy..hard to find words...my prayers and sympathies are with all of those involved.

They are now reporting that she Is still alive,In critical condition

TUCSON, Arizona (Reuters) – Representative Gabrielle Giffords was alive but in surgery at a hospital on Saturday after a shooting that also injured at least nine other people, a hospital spokeswoman said.

An earlier report from National Public Radio said Giffords had died.

"She is currently in surgery. She's alive," University Medical Center spokeswoman Darci Slaten told Reuters.

Slaten said there were nine other shooting victims at the hospital with serious injuries.
