    Gates - $1 BILLION Grant for Minorities!

    REC'D VIA EMAIL

    Dear LULAC Members:

    Subject: Gates Millennium Scholars 2008 Guidelines and Forms

    I wanted to alert you to an important opportunity for our youth. The Gates Millennium Scholars program, established in 1999, was initially funded by a 1 billion dollar grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential.

    Please encourage outstanding students who have significant financial need and leadership potential for the GMS program. The program selects one thousand students per year as Gates Millennium Scholars. The scholarship supports the costs of attendance, and can be renewed each year during the Scholars undergraduate program. The award is also renewable for graduate study for those who choose one of the seven graduate majors: public health, mathematics, science, computer science, engineering, education, or library science.

    Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they:

    Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American;
    Are a citizen, legal permanent resident or national of the United States;
    Have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted);
    Will be entering a U.S. accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking
    freshman in the Fall of 2008;
    Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities; and
    Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria -For more information visit http://www.fafsa.ed.qov/;
    Have completed and submitted all three required forms (Nominee Personal Information Form, Nominator Form, and Recommender Form) by the deadline.
    Nomination forms are available at http://www.gmsp.orq/.

    The Deadlines for Submission of Nomination Materials are as follows:

    All paper applications must be postmarked by December 31, 2007.
    All online applications must be submitted by January 11, 2008 11:59 p.m. EST.

    For information on additional scholarship opportunities please visit our education portal at http://www.lulac.org/education

    Help LULAC ensure that deserving Latino students get the financial assistance they need to go to college.

    Sincerely,

    Rosa Rosales
    LULAC National President

    Are a citizen, legal permanent resident or national of the United States;
    Well, that excludes half the "latinos" currently residing in the U.S..

    Reverse Discrimination:

    Bill and Melinda Gates should help ALL poor kids with this program regardless of their ethnicity. By only helping "minorities", their foundation is discriminating against poor kids who could use a helping hand. How much longer do some American kids need to pay for the sins (real or imaginary) of their ancestors? Talk about unfair.

    Once again, I am being discriminated against because of my race.

    I guess he assumes white boys are all privileged - like he was. He sure does seem to think so - he's more concerned about Africans, Indians and Mexicans than what happens to the average American. I do appreciate what he and Linda have done concerning malaria, but moving his company to Canada to get more H1Bs is traitorous to the country that gave him the opportunity and infrastructure to use his intellect to become rich.
    I guess women aren't minorities anymore - must be because they have achieved equality in income and corporate/political representation. Should I be celebrating?

    I wonder what would happen if poor anglo kids apply for this scholarship and all things being equal, are turned down only because of their race?

    There are definitely laws against this, aren't there?

    I would encourage ANY poor child to apply and let the fur fly.

    SO ALL OF THOSE WHO QUALIFY HAVE HYPHENATED STATUSES.

    ISN'T THIS A RACIST AND DISCRIMINATORY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM?

    If you exclude someone because of their race wouldn't that be discrimination?It appears Mr. Gates forgot to include members of a certain race eligible for these scholarships.I'm sure it was just an oversight. Yeah,sure.
