Group wants to restrict actions of Minutemen

Members of a city-appointed advisory committee passed a resolution restricting the actions of vigilante groups on Tuesday.

The Rev. Alfred Krebs, pastor of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, speaks at a press conference against anti-immigrant vigilantes.

The resolution, which targeted civilian border defense groups such as the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, requires approval by the Austin City Council, and will be considered at a later meeting.

Only four citizens were allowed to testify at the Austin Commission on Human Rights, and no members or supporters of the Minutemen were at the meeting.

"Vigilantism is beyond the pale. It is like executing the mentally ill and children, it is like torture, it is unthinkable," said Paul Sherr, a member of the Austin Central Labor Council at the hearing. An ESL teacher and a Unitarian preacher also testified before the commission.

The Minutemen, an Arizona-based group that started a Texas chapter this summer, seeks to "report and observe" illegal immigrants entering the United States.

"The U.S. Border Patrol are good at their work but they're outmanned, underpaid and understaffed," said Phil Johnson, leader of the Minutemen's Houston chapter.

Johnson said that the Minute-men are sometimes equipped with personally financed night-vision equipment that is better than that of the border police.

The Border Patrol did not respond to requests for comment.

Alessandra Lippucci, a government professor who specializes in constitutional issues, said that even if law enforcement officials think that vigilante groups are helping, the civilian groups still do not have the same authority as the Border Patrol. Lippucci also questioned whether the government actually needs and wants such support.

"If we really wanted people power at the border, we would have it," Lippucci said.

The commission's resolution would create a network of local community leaders and organizations to monitor groups like the Minutemen to ensure that no act or threat of force is made toward illegal immigrants.

William Hale, chair of the commission, said that his main fear about the Minutemen is that they have been infiltrated by white supremacist organizations. Hale quoted an investigation conducted by the Southern Poverty Law Center, a liberal civil rights organization, which found some Minutemen to have white supremacist sympathies.

Johnson said that before being admitted Minutemen volunteers must get a criminal background check and be interviewed, to screen for agitators and racists.

He said he believes that efforts to place limits on the activities of the Minutemen will not be successful.

"We're American, we're here to stay," said Johnson. "We will overshadow the socialist and communists who are against us."

Yvonne Montejano, an associate of the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker human rights group which drafted the resolution, said that she doesn't expect the resolution the keep Minutemen from coming to Austin.

"This is a proactive decision," she said. "It will regulate them."
    END

"Vigilantism is beyond the pale. It is like executing the mentally ill and children, it is like torture, it is unthinkable," said Paul Sherr,"

It sounds like they need to regulate hysterical moonbats.

This is good. The movement is calling out all the radical leftists and finally forcing them to go public with their views. Once these wacky views are more well publicized the general public will wholeheartedly reject them.

The American Communist Party was formed in 1945. They were counting on a slick ride to supremacy through basically not being taken seriously enough to have the general public pay attention. Public apathy in their corner, they have since then (with the help of the hijacked ACLU) worked their way into the American political fabric through the court system. They have never been FORCED to come forward publically with their views. Combine these factors with public apathy and one can see where the movement was gaining steam.

Until now. The Minutemen are forcing them to stand before the U.S.A. in their underwear, and they HATE it.

This is interesting. I wonder how many legal American citizens and ranchers on privately owned property here in Texas would like to have such a guarantee??

Considering that so many of these illegals are brought into this country by 'coyotes' who are heavily armed and frequently bringing drugs in also, where is OUR right to 'no threat of force'??

I wonder also what do these folks think 'terrorism' might be?? Is terrorism only middle easterners hijacking airlines or bombing subways?

The things that I have read about what is happening to my fellow ranchers who live nearer the border definitely qualify as 'terror' in the first degree. Their stock water poisoned, their stock killed, their fences cut, their homes invaded for food and water, their homes shot at during the night as a 'keep your head down' warning. Those folks are unable to freely walk and enjoy their property...this is 'terror'.

I would guarantee NO ONE entering illegally that they would have safety and peace of mind while invading my country. This is part and parcel of the problem.

I have a much younger cousin who grew up in Julian, Ca. outside San Diego. In 1986, when she was about 7, an illegal crossed their property and attempted to abduct her.

As for Texas, I lived there from 00-05 (minus one year in Iraq) and watched the problem go from a trickle to a tsunami in that span of time, especially from 1/04 to 2/05 while I was overseas.

    Shameful. Just shameful.

    I wonder

How much our men and women overseas fighting for this country know that the government is destroying the very country they are dying to defend. What are they going to have to come home to?

Something tells me they are not so brainwashed as to not see what is happening (that is if they can get the truth).

Ohflyingone, and everyone who posted here, this is something I've been thinking about and noticing too. Our troops. They just don't know the extent things have come to in the USA. They've been over in the Middle East and so much of this invasion has transpired while they've been gone.

When they come home, they probably spend a lot of time enjoying home, and visiting friends and family. It really has created a situation to where they haven't been able to see what's happening to the fullest extent. In fact, I predict that a whole lot of them are going to be darn mad once they really find out about it. Their CIC was tearing their country down while they were risking their lives for it. It's not right, it's really shameful, as redrebel says.

I just scanned this article. There's no reason to waste time reading it. It's all leftist propaganda. But Gearhead, you did a good job in posting it, because it just fuels our cause even more.

Reporting illegal aliens to the Border Patrol is the same as torturing and executing children!

Wait a second, restricting their actions amounts to limiting their Constitutional rights!

WHERE IS THE ACLU! Defending the people who want to limit Constitutionality? hmmmm.....

    krebs

In my ongoing attempt to educate I will continue in my "whats's in a name campaign"?

I do this to extend the multi-cultural ties that we in this country share, and since I love language, all languages, I like to look at word origins.

The Lutheran Church is a contruct of Protestant Reformation, begun in 1520 by Martin Luther in response largely to Catholic church abuses he disliked. This occured in Wittenburg, now part of Germany.

This pastor krebs has a demigogic quality to be sure, and of interest to me is that his name "krebs" is the the German word for CANCER! cheers glenn
