Thread: Political Battle on Illegal Immigration Shifts to States

Legislative leaders in at least half a dozen states say they will propose bills similar to a controversial law to fight illegal immigration that was adopted by Arizona last spring, even though a federal court has suspended central provisions of that statute.

The efforts, led by Republicans, are part of a wave of state measures coming this year aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration.

Legislators have also announced measures to limit access to public colleges and other benefits for illegal immigrants and to punish employers who hire them.

Next week, at least five states plan to begin an unusual coordinated effort to cancel automatic United States citizenship for children born in this country to illegal immigrant parents.
Opponents say that effort would be unconstitutional, arguing that the power to grant citizenship resides with the federal government, not with the states. Still, the chances of passing many of these measures appear better than at any time since 2006, when many states, frustrated with inaction in Washington, began proposing initiatives to curb illegal immigration.

Republicans gained more than 690 seats in state legislatures nationwide in the November midterms, winning their strongest representation at the state level in more than 80 years. Few people expect movement on immigration issues when Congress reconvenes next week in a divided Washington. Republicans, who will control the House of Representatives, do not support an overhaul of immigration laws that President Obama has promised to continue to push. State lawmakers say it has fallen to them to act.

They're just getting around to barring the illegals from public universities?????? I don't know why they haven't done this already. About a month ago I was standing in line at the advisement office one day at school, the gal in front of me literally couldn't speak a lick of English yet she managed to be taking classes there! And guess who is probably paying for her tuition!

Furthermore, sounds to me like the states are so fed up with the federal government that they are teaming up now! Obama wanted to pick on little ole Arizona, but let's see him pick on all of the states teamed up together!

Among the states expected to introduce bills similar to Arizona’s are Georgia, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

Woo hoo! And it will be a badge of honor to be amongst all the other states the traitorous Obamanation regime tries to sue!

Which states are comming together to change the birthright citizenship deal?

Its also within states power to do that as the US Constitution doesn't specify that its a federal power. It also gives states the power to protect their own borders if need be which this could easily be argued for.

Any idea which state leader is the one getting the states together? With enough support of other states they could pass a state made federal amendment using article 5 of the US Constitution.

Metcalfe’s office said lawmakers in at least 12 other states besides Arizona and Pennsylvania said they were making their own announcements about working on the citizenship legislation. Those other states: Alabama, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah. Legislators from a total of 41 states are involved in a Metcalfe-founded group concerned with immigration issues.
