How to Report Employers Who Hire Illegal Immigrants:

By Regal Legal, eHow Member:

Illegal immigrants, also called illegal aliens, are individuals who fail to report their emigration into the country as required by U.S. immigration law. Thousands illegal immigrants enter the U.S. undocumented every year, and the problem continues to grow.

The epidemic is worsened by those who exploit these individuals by hiring illegal immigrants to work for salaries far below minimum wage, and without offering traditional benefits like health insurance typically afforded to other employers.

To combat the exploitation, the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (also called ICE) now encourages citizens to report employers who hire illegal immigrants. If you suspect an employer is hiring illegal immigrants to exploit them for cheap labor, you should report the employer to the ICE immediately.

Difficulty:EasyInstructions

(1)

Obtain information about the employer, including his first and last name, physical address, and place of employment. If you become aware of more personal information, like his Social Security number and date of birth, this would be helpful, as well.

Do not violate the employer's right to privacy or commit any crimes in obtaining to find the information; if it is not readily available to you in public sources, or he does not offer up the information himself, you can still report the employer for hiring illegal immigrants.

Tip: Try searching online resources. A free background check might give you the information you are looking for. Social networking websites, like MySpace or Facebook, may also be a surprisingly great source for information if the employer uses these sites.

(2)

Obtain information about the illegal immigrants, including their real names, addresses, and their place of employment. Also determine how many illegal immigrants you believe the employer currently employs. While the more information you can obtain, the better your report will be.

(3)

Draft a letter to the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement detailing the information you have obtained about the employers and the illegal immigrants. Be sure to provide the name and address of the establishment where they are currently employed. Provide your contact information at the bottom, including your telephone number.

Note: While you can report employers who hire illegal immigrants anonymously, it is preferable that you provide your name and contact information. This enables the ICE to investigate the matter thoroughly. Your name and information will only be used by the ICE to contact you in the event they need your assistance. Your name and information will not be released to anyone else, including the employer who hired the illegal immigrants.

(4)
