LAUREL, Miss. —A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer opened fire Wednesday on a suspect who police said was resisting a Laurel police officer, federal officials said.

The ICE officer, who works with the agency’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, responded about 9 p.m. to a request for assistance from the Laurel Police Department.

Authorities did not say where the incident happened.

When the officer arrived, he saw the suspect “actively resisting” the local officer and told him in English and Spanish to stop.

Authorities said the suspect reached into his clothing and the ICE officer fired his weapon, shooting the suspect in the arm.

The suspect, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting an inquiry.
